The School of Environmental Education at Camp Kappe, Plantersville, TX

Job Title: Environmental Education Instructor.

Employment type: Full-time Employee.

Experience required: 0-2 Years.

Base Pay: Salary.

The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston is seeking suitable candidates for the position of Environmental Education Instructor for the School of Environmental Education (S.E.E.) at Camp Kappe in Plantersville, TX. Camp Kappe is a 130-acre Catholic camp and youth retreat center about an hour northwest of Houston, TX. The primary responsibility of the position is to help 5th grade students learn how to be good stewards of God's creation through leading various lessons and activities in environmental and conservation education. This is a year-round, full-time, benefits and PTO eligible position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Plan and facilitate lessons to 5th grade students in topics such as: ecosystems and habitats, wildlife biology, forestry and plant identification, aquatic ecology, soil science, animal husbandry, and conservation and environmental stewardship.
  • Lead field investigations, nature hikes, and outdoor science activities that encourage observation, exploration, and scientific thinking.
  • Collaborate with fellow instructors to continuously evaluate and improve curriculum and programming.
  • Help students develop an appreciation and wonder for the natural world and their responsibility to care for God's creation.
  • Adapt instruction to meet the needs and abilities of different student groups.
  • Maintain a safe learning environment by following established safety procedures during all activities.
  • Prepare instructional materials, equipment, and learning stations before each program.
  • Care for educational supplies, live animals, and equipment as assigned.
  • Communicate effectively with teachers, chaperones, and camp staff regarding schedules, student needs, and program expectations.
  • Teach and lead activities such as archery and canoeing, as well as various team building activities.
  • Assist with general camp operations and special events as needed.
  • Plan and initiate a summer camp experience for middle school students.
  • Perform various other duties as assigned.
Education / Experience / Character Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in Education, Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, Wildlife Management, Earth Science, or a related field. Being a certified teacher in the state of Texas is a plus.
  • Passion for environmental education and outdoor learning.
  • Experience working with children or youth in educational, camp, or outdoor settings.
  • Strong oral communication and classroom management skills.
  • Ability to work outdoors for long periods in varying weather conditions and over uneven terrain, along with the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of Camp Kappe and the Archdiocese of Galveston Houston.
About the Employer

The School of Environmental Education (S.E.E.) is a program of the Camp Kappe Youth Retreat Facility and is an accredited school of the Archdiocese of Galveston Houston offering a supplemental education program to the parochial schools of the area.

S.E.E. provides 5th grade students in our Catholic schools a four-day outdoor experience of God's gift of nature while studying life cycles, food chains, the environment's effect on man, man's effect on the environment, conservation of resources, etc. It offers hands-on experience with farm animals and gardening along with many other exciting adventures in outdoor education.
