Job summary

The Environmental Specialist II (NS) position is with the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) in the Fayetteville Regional Office. It involves technical and regulatory reviews of environmental reports, handling spill notifications, and field oversight of activities related to underground storage tanks.

Travel to sites is required, with a hybrid telework option allowing both in-office and remote workdays.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in one of the agricultural, biological, engineering, environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Two years of experience related to the area of assignment.

Responsibilities

• Provides independent technical and regulatory reviews of initial environmental reports for petroleum releases and prepare subsequent appropriate correspondence and update databases.
• Communicates technical and regulatory information to stakeholders that include responsible parties, consultants, municipalities, other Divisions and Agencies, and the general public.
• Conducts site visits to investigate complaints, verify spill cleanup, and provide regulatory oversight of field activities.
• Prepares enforcement correspondence for non-compliant responsible parties.
