Qualifications

  • J.D. from ABA-accredited law school with distinguished academic credentials.
  • Active Bar admission in good standing in the state of primary office location.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of substantive energy regulatory experience.
  • Demonstrated experience handling matters involving FERC or state public utility commissions.
  • Superior written and oral advocacy skills with ability to analyze complex regulatory frameworks.

Responsibilities

  • Represent renewable energy developers, independent power producers, data center operators, and PE sponsors before FERC and state commissions.
  • Counsel clients on wholesale energy markets, transmission access, interconnection standards, rate design, and regulatory compliance.
  • Assist with environmental due diligence and transactional structuring for energy asset acquisitions and project financings.
  • Draft and negotiate complex energy contracts, PPAs, interconnection arrangements, and regulatory filings.
  • Manage regulatory disputes and investigations while advising on risk mitigation.

Mid-to-Senior Energy Regulatory & Infrastructure Associate

Practice Area: Energy Regulatory Law / Federal & State Public Utility Governance & Environmental Transactions

Location: Washington, DC | Charlotte, NC | Houston, TX | Columbia, SC

Salary: $250,000.00 to $350,000.00 Annually (Plus discretionary performance bonus eligibility and comprehensive health and retirement benefit package)

Schedule: Full-time, Direct-Hire, Minimum 1,850 hours annual billed target.

Duties

The incoming Senior Energy Regulatory Associate will serve as a core legal advisor within the firm's Energy, Environmental, and Projects practice group, delivering strategic guidance on regulatory, transactional, and policy matters.

Core responsibilities include:
  • Representing renewable energy developers, independent power producers, data center operators, and private equity sponsors in complex regulatory administrative proceedings before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and state public utility commissions.
  • Counseling enterprise clients on wholesale power markets, transmission access, interconnection standards, rate design, and regulatory compliance under federal and state energy statutes.
  • Assisting with environmental due diligence, regulatory risk assessment, and transactional structuring for major energy asset acquisitions, project financings, and infrastructure developments.
  • Drafting and negotiating complex commercial energy contracts, power purchase agreements, interconnection arrangements, regulatory filings, and petition submissions.
  • Managing administrative disputes, agency investigations, and regulatory enforcement matters while providing proactive risk mitigation strategies for energy market participants.
Qualifications

Candidates must demonstrate technical regulatory competence, sophisticated legal writing skills, and an established foundation in energy law.

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an ABA-accredited law school with distinguished academic credentials.
  • Active Bar admission in good standing in the state corresponding to the primary office location.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of substantive energy regulatory experience gained within a reputable mid-sized or large law firm setting.
  • Demonstrated experience handling matters involving the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) or state public utility commissions.
  • Superior written and oral advocacy skills with a proven capacity to analyze complex administrative and statutory frameworks.
Skills

The following credentials and experience are highly advantageous for prospective candidates:

  • Specific transactional experience representing digital infrastructure enterprises, clean energy funds, or utility-scale solar, wind, and energy storage developers.
  • Familiarity with environmental enforcement defense, CERCLA/Clean Water Act transactional due diligence, or environmental litigation.
  • Proven ability to manage complex administrative agency dockets independently while collaborating effectively across multi-disciplinary deal teams.
  • Strong commercial acumen with a strategic approach to client counseling and practice development.
