Job summary

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Math, or Chemistry with 45 quarter or 30 semester credits.
  • Must become an Environmental Health Specialist In Training (EHSIT) within 90 days.
  • Must become an Environmental Health Specialist within three years.
  • To be eligible for lead hazard inspections, Ohio Lead Based Paint Inspector and Lead Based Paint Risk Assessor certifications are required.
  • Valid State of Ohio Driver’s License and access to a properly insured vehicle (mileage reimbursed).
  • Must be able to lift and carry 30 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct inspections of food service operators, homes with lead hazards, and other facilities.
  • Issues orders, notices, or referrals and re-inspects for compliance.
  • Directs field teams in surveying for rat infection and baiting rat burrows.
  • Inspect barber shops, swimming pools, schools, institutions, places of assembly, trailer parks, motels, laundries, and other recreation facilities.
  • Investigates citizens’ complaints related to garbage, vacant lots, sewage, animals, weeds, and grass.
  • Enforces city health codes and counsels residents in sanitation methods.

Environment Health Specialist in Training

The Cleveland Department of Public Health strives to be the most responsive, most trusted, most impactful health department in the country. In this role, you will help to promote health and prevent disease through health inspections of food service operators, homes that have caused lead poisoning, and many more. Conducts both routine and "troubleshooter" inspections in private homes to insure proper environmental hygiene. Issues orders, notices, or referrals to other departments, and re-inspects to insure compliance. Directs field teams involved in both surveying areas for rat infection and baiting rat burrows in those areas. Inspects barber shops, swimming pools (public and private), marinas, schools (private and public), institutions, places of assembly, trailer parks, motels, hotels, laundries, and other recreation facilities. Investigates citizens' complaints relative to garbage and refuse, vacant lots, sewage, animals, weeds, and grass. Inspects and evaluates food shops and instructs industry personnel in proper sanitation methods. Inspects and evaluates properties for lead hazards, tests for lead levels and assesses lead-related environmental risks and hazards as directed. Trains and supervises first-level sanitarians, environmental technicians, and sanitarian aides. Counsels residents in sanitation methods. Helps plan programs and work schedules. Enforces both state and city health codes. Must be familiar with court procedures and methods of license revocation regarding code violations. Performs other job-relate duties as required. May be assigned other tasks during public health emergencies.

Bachelor’s Degree with 45 quarter or 30 semester credits hours in Science, Math, or Chemistry from an accredited four-year college or university required. Must be an Environmental Health Specialist In Training or become one within 90 days of the date of hire. Must become an Environmental Health Specialist (EHSIT) within three years of the date of hire. Must maintain EHSIT or EHS registration during employment. In order to be eligible or considered to perform lead hazard inspections and assessments, must have Ohio Lead Based Paint Inspector and Lead Based Paint Risk Assessor certifications. Valid State of Ohio Driver’s License required. Must own or have access to a properly insured vehicle (mileage will be reimbursed). Must be able to lift and carry 30 pounds.
