Job summary

Bowman Consulting seeks a Stormwater Management Inspector in Fairfax, VA to perform comprehensive inspections of stormwater facilities and support high-quality field work with our clients.

This entry-level role emphasizes reading construction plans, operating inspection equipment including drones, and coordinating with project teams to ensure compliance and quality. Training and DEQ certification within six months are provided as part of professional growth.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Entry-level position; no experience necessary (knowledge of engineering, construction, and/or inspection fields preferred).
• State certification from the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) within 6 months is required (ESC, SWIN, and/or Dual Inspector); company-paid.
• Working skills in operating computer equipment, software programs, and field inspection equipment.
• Ability to read and interpret construction plans.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
• Ability to pass a criminal background check and hold a valid state driver’s license with a motor vehicle check.
• General knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices, and methods applicable to municipal settings; working knowledge of laws, standards, and regulations related to construction, inspection, safety, and traffic control.
• Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, plans, specifications, and contract documents; apply material testing procedures; maintain inspection data, reports, and systems; perform mathematical computations.

Responsibilities

• Lead and support stormwater inspection services under supervision, ensuring adherence to procedures.
• Foster positive client relationships and represent the firm professionally.
• Perform inspections for SWM/BMP/LID/GI facilities and conduct related construction inspections.
• Document and process inspection photos, forms, and field measurements.
• Prepare inspection reports and maintain files of inspection activities and findings.
• Oversee field work and coordinate pay items with contractors and superintendents.
• Ensure erosion and sediment controls and safety devices are properly installed and maintained.
