Job summary

The County of Monterey Housing and Community Development (HCD) Department is seeking an Assistant Planner. This entry level position performs routine land use planning assignments and supports project reviews under guidance from management and senior staff.

Responsibilities include gathering data, preparing staff reports, inspecting sites, and interpreting planning policies. Veterans and eligible spouses receive preference; flexible county-wide staffing may apply.

Qualifications

• Completion of all course work leading to a Bachelor's degree in Planning or a closely related field; or
• Completion of the equivalent of two full-time years of college in planning or a closely related field; and
• A minimum of two years of progressive experience in land use planning or a related field; or
• A minimum of four years of experience in land use planning or a related field, with internship desirable.

Responsibilities

• Provides factual and interpretive information to the public regarding land use plans and permit review processes.
• Reviews land use entitlements and referrals for consistency with adopted plans; develops staff recommendations and writes staff reports.
• Conducts studies and analyzes data to develop basis for conclusions and tracks data as needed.
• Researches and records factual property information from various sources; maintains information in the County's databases; operates office equipment.
• Performs field inspections to verify compliance with permit conditions and data accuracy.
