Job summary

Intertek seeks an Entry-Level Laboratory Technician I in Austin, Texas to join our PSI team. The role involves performing testing on soils, aggregates, concrete, and related materials under supervision, and contributing to accurate data collection and reporting.

You will prepare specimens, run standard tests, maintain equipment, and support project timelines while adhering to safety and quality policies. A pathway to grow in construction materials testing is available.

Qualifications

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to perform fieldwork.
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must be able to work off shift and overtime as needed.
  • Ability to lift 30–50 pounds frequently; occasional heavy lifting with assistance.
  • Ability to receive detailed information and follow procedures accurately.
  • Ability to walk/stand for long periods and work outdoors in varying weather.

Responsibilities

  • Perform laboratory testing on soil, aggregate, concrete, asphalt, and other construction materials following ASTM/AASHTO/TxDOT standards.
  • Prepare, cure, and test concrete cylinders and other specimens.
  • Conduct routine laboratory procedures including moisture content, Atterberg limits, Proctor, sieve analysis, and compressive strength testing.
  • Record test data accurately and assist in preparing laboratory reports.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and work areas in clean, organized condition.
  • Assist with calibration and routine maintenance of equipment.
  • Follow safety policies and quality assurance procedures.
  • Work with laboratory personnel to meet project deadlines.

The Laboratory Technician role performs a variety of testing, project specific observations and site assessment duties under direct supervision and/or from detailed controlled procedures.

What you’ll do:
  • Perform laboratory testing on soil, aggregate, concrete, asphalt, and other construction materials following ASTM, AASHTO, and TxDOT standards.

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications:
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to perform fieldwork and reliable driving record
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Must be able to work off shift and overtime as needed
  • Ability to lift, move, push and pull 30 to 50 pounds frequently; Occasionally, over 50 pounds with assistance
  • Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, (hearing) and to make the discriminations in sound
  • Ability to kneel and squat occasionally
  • Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions, including hot and cold temperatures
  • Ability to climb occasionally, and work at various heights
  • Perform geotechnical laboratory testing including Atterberg limits, grain size analysis, moisture content, and Proctor compaction tests.
  • Conduct soil and rock classification and maintain accurate records.
  • Assist with field investigations including drilling, sampling, and site inspections.
  • Prepare laboratory reports and summarize test results.
  • Ensure compliance with ASTM and AASHTO standards.
  • Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment.
Preferred Requirements & Qualifications:
  • Geotechnical / CMT laboratory experience
  • ACI (American Concrete Institute) Certification
  • NICET certification or equivalent
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Geologist-in-Training (GIT) status
  • Experience with construction materials testing including concrete and compaction
  • Bachelor’s degree in Geology, or related field
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish)
  • Working knowledge of soil mechanics and laboratory testing procedures
