Job Description

The Expended Core Programs unit within Core Materials, Manufacturing, and Irradiations (CMMI) department seeks an entry level Engineer. This role connects CMMI and Capital Projects on the Naval Examination Acquisition Project (NEAP) and other early-stage recapitalization projects. NEAP is one of the major NNL recapitalization projects to support the continued Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program expended core and irradiation testing mission; supporting development of new core designs, advance core and plant technology, naval fleet support, and safe handling and storage of spent nuclear fuel. The Engineer ensures NEAP and future recapitalization project design technical requirements are translated into efficient, safe, and reliable facility and examination systems to meet the varying test sponsor needs.



  • Provide technical input to NEAP decisions, including facility and examination system functional requirements, process flow, and technology selection.

  • Plan and champion unique examination capabilities to support expended core and irradiation test specimen examinations.

  • Coordinate examination system testing and support facility startup.

  • Act as a key interface with Capital Projects and other stakeholders responsible for program management and NEAP execution.

  • Partner with NEAP Lead Engineers to represent the interests of the examination test sponsor community.

  • Engage early and frequently to form facility and system characteristics that enable efficient, safe, reliable operations through effective verbal and written communication.

  • Occasional travel to other NNL sites and external partners.


Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering or science field; or Masters degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering or science field.


Preferred Skills


  • Preferred degrees in Mechanical, Aero, or Systems Engineering

  • GPA of 3.0 or higher

  • Ability to integrate diverse needs and reach consensus on technical and administrative topics.

Pay Range

$63,900.00 - $97,800.00 annually


Salary information provided is a general guideline only. Annual salary is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.


The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC (FMP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation.
