Job summary

S&ME, Inc. is seeking a part-time Entry-Level Construction Materials Engineering Technician in Chattanooga, Tennessee for hands-on field and lab work on outdoor projects.

You will start with concrete sampling and testing, then expand into soils, asphalt, and masonry while gaining experience on active sites. Receive paid, on-the-job training with support for ACI and ICC certifications, and work in an outdoor environment with varying conditions.

Qualifications

• Must have strong English communication skills (spoken, reading, writing).
• Basic math skills including units of measure, weight, volume and pressure.
• Willingness to learn and obtain certifications as part of growth.
• Valid U.S. driver’s license with acceptable driving record and ability to operate company vehicles.

Responsibilities

• Perform field and lab tests and maintain equipment.
• Ensure accurate, complete reporting and data management.
• Conduct inspections per IBC codes and document findings (Metafield®).
• Assist with testing basics (concrete sampling/test then soils, asphalt, masonry).
• Support safety and quality standards on active construction sites.

S&ME is looking for a hard‑working, part‑time Entry‑Level Construction Materials Engineering Technician ready for hands‑on learning to join our Construction Services team in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

As a part‑time entry‑level Construction Materials Engineering Technician, you enjoy starting your day outdoors and take pride in hands‑on work that impacts the projects you work on. At S&ME, our Construction Materials Engineering Technicians are vital to ensuring construction projects meet quality and safety standards. From day one, you'll be in the field gaining hands‑on experience and building a strong foundation for your career.

• Start with the Basics: Begin with concrete sampling and testing, then expand into soils, asphalt, and masonry as you grow.
• Earn While You Learn: Receive paid, on‑the‑job training and support for ACI and ICC certifications.
• Outdoor Work Environment: Enjoy working outside year‑round in changing conditions, with new sites and crews keeping things fresh.
• Testing & Documentation: Perform field and lab tests, maintain equipment, and ensure accurate, complete reporting.
• Inspections & Standards: Conduct inspections per IBC codes, document findings, and manage data using Metafield®.

Field Work, Schedule & Travel

This position is primarily based outdoors on active construction sites throughout Georgia. Work schedules may vary based on project needs and weather conditions and can include early mornings, evenings, weekends, occasional holidays, and overtime opportunities paid at time‑and‑a‑half. Some travel may be required to support projects across the region.

Using company‑provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), you should be comfortable:

• Working outdoors in varying weather conditions
• Traveling to project sites as needed
• Walking over rough, uneven terrain and standing for extended periods, potentially up to 12 hours per day
• Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50 pounds of equipment and materials
• Safely maneuvering field equipment around active construction sites

About You:

• You have a High School diploma/GED
• You bring curiosity and the willingness to learn; obtaining certifications is part of your growth
• You have a strong work ethic and a team mindset
• You have strong attention to detail and effective communication skills in English, including speaking, reading, and writing
• You have basic math skills with an understanding of weight, volume, pressure, and units of measure
• You understand a fluctuating weekly schedule and occasional travel
• You have a valid U.S. driver's license or an International Driving Permit (IDP) valid for driving in the United States, with an acceptable driving record
• You can safely operate a company‑assigned vehicle, including trucks and SUVs
• You are willing to complete a background check, driving record check, and drug screen upon offer of employment
