Job description

Introduction

Launch Your Career Like an IBMer

Every IBMer has a story. For many, it started as soon as they graduated college.

At IBM Infrastructure, we design and build the world's most advanced enterprise hardware — systems trusted by the world's most demanding clients to run their most critical workloads. From IBM Z mainframes to Power Systems, our hardware defines what is possible in reliability, performance, and security.

As an IBM Infrastructure new hire, you won't just continue learning — you'll contribute. From day one, you'll work alongside experienced hardware engineers on real systems undergoing real compliance testing, helping ensure that IBM products meet the rigorous electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and regulatory standards required for global markets. You'll be challenged, supported, and inspired — often all in the same day — in a culture built on continuous learning, mentorship, and coaching.

Your Role And Responsibilities

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Hardware Developer — EMC Engineer to join our Hardware Compliance team within IBM Infrastructure. This is a hands‑on technical role for someone who is passionate about electrical engineering, regulatory compliance, and hardware systems.

You will work directly with senior hardware compliance engineers, applying your electrical engineering knowledge to support EMC and regulatory testing activities on IBM enterprise hardware. You will be expected to follow established procedures precisely, engage actively in lab environments, and contribute to high‑quality technical documentation.

Key Responsibilities Include
  • Hands‑On Hardware Lab Work: Set up, operate, and support hardware test configurations in the EMC compliance lab, handling physical systems, cables, instrumentation, and test fixtures under engineer supervision.
  • EMC/EMI Compliance Testing Support: Assist in executing emissions and immunity test procedures in accordance with applicable regulatory standards (e.g., FCC Part 15, CISPR 32, IEC 61000 series), following all steps precisely as written.
  • Regulatory Document Interpretation: Read, review, and apply requirements from international EMC and safety regulatory standards; flag ambiguities or procedural gaps to senior engineers for resolution.
  • IT Administration Support: Assist with configuration and administration of test systems, lab computers, and instrumentation software required to execute and record compliance test results.
  • Technical Documentation: Author and maintain accurate test records, test reports, compliance checklists, and lab notebooks in support of regulatory submissions and internal quality standards.
  • Collaborative Engineering Participation: Work collaboratively with cross‑functional hardware, mechanical, and systems assurance teams; actively develop new skills and apply them to improve deliverables under the guidance of senior engineers.
Preferred Education

Bachelor's Degree

Required Technical And Professional Expertise
  • Hands‑On Hardware Experience: Demonstrated ability to work directly with physical electronic hardware, including wiring, benchtop instrumentation (oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, signal generators), and hardware assembly or configuration.
  • Electrical Engineering Fundamentals: Working knowledge of circuit analysis, electromagnetic theory, and electronic systems as gained through formal coursework or project work.
  • IT Administration Skills: Ability to configure and administer computer systems, manage files and software tools, and support instrumentation interfaces in a lab or engineering environment.
  • Regulatory Document Proficiency: Demonstrated ability to read, comprehend, and follow detailed technical and regulatory documents, standards, or procedural specifications with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Procedural Discipline: Proven ability and personal commitment to strictly following established procedures, test protocols, and safety guidelines — particularly in a hardware lab or regulated engineering environment.
Preferred Technical And Professional Experience
  • Familiarity with EMC/EMI concepts and international compliance standards such as FCC Part 15, CISPR 32, IEC 61000, or CE marking requirements.
  • Exposure to Python scripting or other programming languages for test automation or data analysis in an engineering context.
  • Experience with signal integrity or power integrity analysis tools or concepts.
  • Prior lab experience gained through academic coursework, co‑op programs, research positions, or personal projects involving hardware build, test, or debug activities.
