Job summary

Newport News Shipbuilding seeks Abrasive Blasters to train in surface preparation, operating blast equipment to create the best coating adhesion on steel structures. Training covers equipment use, maintenance, and safety. You may work in tanks, voids, and at heights using staging and lifting devices.

Qualifications

• Be able to take measurements or be willing to learn.
• Be able to perform kneeling, squatting, crawling, bending, stooping, and climbing daily.
• Be able to lift at least 40 pounds.
• This job may require overhead work.
• Be clean shaven to wear a respirator.
• Be able to work outdoors year‑round in all weather conditions.
• Be able to work at extreme heights.
• Be able to work in small, tight, confined spaces.
• Be able to work any shift to accommodate production needs.

Responsibilities

• Abrasive Blasters will be trained in surface preparation techniques by operating blast equipment designed to create an optimal profile on steel structures.
• Training will cover the use, maintenance, and safe operation of company-provided blast equipment.
