Job summary

Anchorage School District seeks an English Language Learners Tutor to assist non-English speaking and LEP students, individually or in small groups, to improve understanding of classroom concepts.

Responsibilities include developing tutorial plans, completing ELL identification and assessment reports, maintaining attendance records, collaborating with classroom teachers on ESL goals, and attending conferences.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent, or current enrollment in a GED program.
  • Meet paraprofessional requirements for Alaska through one of: 48 college credits, or a passing ETS Paraprofessional Assessment (459+), or WorkKeys, or ASD Master Teacher paraprofessional training.
  • Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and inspire confidence and cooperation among staff, parents, students, administrators, and the public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with staff, parents, students, administrators, and the public.

  • Provides tutorial sessions independently and/or with the classroom teacher according to individual needs and levels of achievement.
  • Develops individual tutorial plans for students as necessary.
  • Completes English Language Learners Program identification and assessment reports.
  • Maintains attendance and program records for students in the ELL program.
  • Collaborates with the classroom teacher to determine ESL needs and learning objectives for referred students.
  • Schedules and/or attends conferences.
  • Attends scheduled in-service training programs.
  • Assists students with materials to achieve English language proficiency.
  • Acts as a liaison or interpreter/translator between the school, teachers, students, and parents when necessary.
  • Introduces multicultural awareness information to LEP students and teachers.

Job Summary

The English Language Learners Tutor assists in teaching English skills to non-English speaking and Limited English Proficient (LEP) students on an individual or small group basis to improve their understanding of concepts in the regular classroom. The position has a retirement association with the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).

Required Job Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent, or current enrollment in a GED program.
  • Must meet paraprofessional requirements for the state of Alaska through one of the following methods: 48 college semester credits from a regionally accredited institution, OR a passing score of 459 or greater on the ETS Paraprofessional Assessment exam, OR passing the WorkKeys by ACT assessment, OR passing the ASD provided Master Teacher paraprofessional training.
  • Excellent organizational and record‑keeping skills.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and inspire confidence and cooperation of staff, parents, students, administrators, and the public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a professional relationship with staff, parents, students, administrators, and the public.
Preferred Job Requirements
  • Knowledge of first aid.
  • Experience and training in working with children in an instructional environment, preferably within a bilingual setting.
  • Fluency in English and at least one other language.
  • Training and experience in English as a Second Language (ESL) programs.
  • Ability to effectively present information to staff, parents, students, administrators, and the public.
  • Ability to maintain effective communication with students, parents, and members of the community.
Essential Job Functions
  • Provides tutorial sessions independently and/or in collaboration with the classroom teacher, according to the individual needs and levels of academic achievement.
  • Develops individual tutorial plans for students as necessary.
  • Completes English Language Learners Program identification and assessment reports.
  • Maintains attendance and program records for students referred to the English Language Learners Program.
  • Collaborates with the classroom teacher in determining the needs of referred students, particularly ESL needs. Develops a plan to meet applicable goals for the students and establishes learning objectives for each referred student.
  • Schedules and/or attends conferences.
  • Attends scheduled in-service training programs.
  • Assists students with materials which will assist with achieving English language proficiency.
  • Acts as a liaison or interpreter/translator between the school, teachers, students, and parents when a language other than English is necessary.
  • Introduces pertinent information to LEP students and classroom teachers about multicultural awareness issues.
Physical / Mental Demands

The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

Work Environment

Work is performed in a professional environment with a wide variety of individuals having differing functions, personalities and abilities, including working with diverse groups of people in a variety of different settings. While performing the duties of this job the employee may be regularly exposed to a video display. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Background Check and Other Conditions

Offers of employment are contingent upon completion of a satisfactory criminal background check. For certificated positions, this is in addition to the background check conducted through the certification process with the Alaska State Department of Education and Early Development (DEED). This position may be required to work in ASD facilities on the military installations (JBER).
