Job summary

BNSF Railway is hiring an Experienced First Line Supervisor in Alliance, NE. This full-time role leads track or structures teams, overseeing maintenance, inspections, and construction of critical railway infrastructure.

Travel up to 75% and relocation are required as the business needs evolve. You will participate in a comprehensive four-to-six month training program with rotations through Fort Worth and Overland Park before field assignments.

Our Engineering Experienced First Line Supervisor role is a pivotal leadership position within our engineering team. The Engineering department is crucial in maintaining and improving the vast network of tracks, structures, and facilities essential for safe and efficient train operations across the country. This team of skilled professionals utilizes cutting-edge technology and engineering principles to ensure the railway infrastructure meets the highest standards of reliability and performance. Your primary responsibilities will revolve around leadership, training, and safety, and contribute to our team’s success and growth.

This is a full-time (minimum 40hrs/wk) position in a24x7 operations environment, subject to on-call, overtime, nights, alternatingshifts, weekends, and holidays.

Travel and Relocation is required. After the 4 to 6-month program, candidates must be flexible with their location (as they could be moved depending on business needs), must have reliable transportation to and from work, and travel up to 75% of the time.

  • Begin with an invigorating one-week orientation at our Fort Worth headquarters, immersing yourself in BNSF culture and forging connections with industry leaders.
  • Sharpen your skills at our Technical Training Center for two to three weeks in Overland Park, delving into technical intricacies and personnel management.
  • The remainder of your journey entails immersive on-the-job field training, offering hands-on experience across diverse departments.

Key Responsibilities:

This role offers a unique opportunity to join our team in either the Track or Structures team, contributing to essential infrastructure that supports BNSF’s operations.

In the Track Department, you will be able to:
  • Inspect, maintain, repair, and construct our track infrastructure, which encompasses rails, ties, and ballast, to uphold BNSF’s standards.
  • Participate in various projects related to Track infrastructure maintenance, construction, and innovation.
  • Collaborate with experienced engineers and managers to learn and implement best practices in railway engineering.
  • Gain insights into safety protocols, regulatory compliance, and environmental stewardship initiatives
  • Foster relationships with cross-functional teams to drive operational efficiency and continuous improvement.
In the Structures Department, you will be able to:
  • Administer, supervise, and coordinate all maintenance, construction, inspection and operation of bridges and structures, both operating and capital functions
  • Participate in various projects related to expansion of BNSF terminals & hubs, central lines, facilities, the repair & replacement of structures, & oversight of public projects and utility crossings.
  • Collaborate with experienced engineers and managers to learn and implement best practices in railway engineering.
  • Gain insights into safety protocols, regulatory compliance, and environmental stewardship initiatives
  • Foster relationships with cross-functional teams to drive operational efficiency and continuous improvement.

Daily work is conducted in an indoor/outdoor safety sensitive environment where the working conditions can include diverse and extreme weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet), walking and performing work on uneven surfaces, working around loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States and will be at least eighteen (18) years old upon hire AND have a valid Driver's License or will have a valid Driver's License upon hire.
  • Does not require BNSF’s assistance, now or in the future, (whether monetary, through sponsorship, or otherwise) to obtain, maintain, or extend employment authorization (including H-1B, STEM OPT/CPT, or TN nonimmigrant status).
  • Capable of working in a 24/7 environment, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and can safely perform duties outdoors in all weather conditions or in a shop, terminal, or field environment. Role includes climbing ladders and navigating uneven surfaces, with the ability to travel up to 75% of the time based on business needs.
  • Able and willing to relocate anywhere on the BNSF Railway operating system (western 28 states) upon hire, career progression, and/or business needs. If you have any location restrictions, please answer "No."
  • Have a high school degree or achieved a degree through a GED program.
  • Have at least three (3) years of military and/or professional work experience supervising five (5) or more employees.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work.
