What You Will Do

This position is open for only external candidates to apply.

The selected candidate will provide technical support as an Engineering Technologist. In this role, you will be responsible for maintaining, optimizing, and improving manufacturing and production equipment to ensure maximum uptime, safety, and performance. This is a critical role for supporting production goals, introducing new technologies, and driving continuous improvement initiatives. Individuals working in this position will be interacting with multiple organizations to ensure the implementation and compliance with facility, institutional, state, and federal requirements.

At Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), we are driven by a mission to solve national security challenges through scientific excellence. Located in the stunning high desert of northern New Mexico, LANL is one of the premier U.S. national laboratories, with a rich history dating back to the Manhattan Project. Today, we continue to lead the way in multidisciplinary research, pushing the boundaries of science, technology, and engineering to make the world a safer, more secure place.

As a member of the Pit Technologies team, you will join a diverse and inclusive community of scientists, engineers, and professionals advancing our nation's nuclear security and plutonium operations. While working in a dynamic and rewarding environment, your work at LANL will have a lasting impact.

This position will be filled at either the Engineering Technologist 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

This role involves collaborating with a team of engineers and technologists to repair, maintain, and enhance electro-mechanical equipment, including systems related to radiography, leak check systems, inspection equipment, and robotics. The position is responsible for supporting and executing preventive and predictive maintenance programs, as well as promptly troubleshooting and resolving equipment malfunctions to minimize operational downtime. The individual will work closely with cross-functional, multi-disciplinary teams to coordinate programmatic maintenance and conduct corrective maintenance on down equipment. This role will support maintenance plans and procedures for processing equipment. Additionally, the role includes participating in the planning, procurement, and implementation of new equipment within the manufacturing facility with Process Engineers, while adapting to evolving technical requirements and consistently meeting safety, security, compliance, and scheduling standards. The position also requires assisting in the preparation and documentation of work authorizations to support operational and project activities.

Engineering Technologist 2 ($96,600- $158,800)

In addition to the tasks outlined above, the Engineering Technologist 2 role is responsible for taking a larger leadership role including leading corrective maintenance, documenting equipment maintenance, and mentoring staff. The technologist 2 will drive continuous improvement of preventive and predictive maintenance programs to enhance equipment reliability and performance, in addition to collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams to coordinate and define programmatic maintenance. A key aspect of the role includes mentoring and developing career staff and students to build technical capability within the organization. The individual is expected to independently communicate the status of equipment health and status of maintenance activities to both management and peers. Furthermore, the role involves leading the development and refinement of work authorizing documents to support safe, compliant, and well-documented operations. This role will be responsible for ensuring equipment spares are maintained for production equipment.
