Job summary

The Tatitlek Corporation is seeking an Engineering Technician IV in Portsmouth, VA, to support system installation and integration on Coast Guard boats and cutters. You will receive initial instructions and work independently on recurring tasks while coordinating with engineers and supervisors.

Responsibilities include electrical/electronic/C4I installation, testing, and documentation, with opportunities to lead crews and mentor juniors.

Qualifications

  • Must be a US citizen and possess or be able to obtain/maintain a SECRET clearance.
  • High School diploma and 4 years’ experience in US Coast Guard or US Navy C4I system installation integration support.
  • NavSea Cableway and/or connector certification are desired but not required.
  • Experience with Cable Fabrication (Multi-pin, RF, Network, Power, Fiber, Mil-spec, or serial cable assemblies).

Responsibilities

  • Performs installation/removal/upgrades for electrical/electronic/C4I tasks (i.e. wiring of terminal boxes, testing and verifying connections, meggering cables, testing and troubleshooting, etc.).
  • Work with minimal supervision.
  • Performs system testing to evaluate performance and functionality with supervision.
  • Operates tools to aid in fabricating, installing, removing, and upgrading tasks.
  • Uses drawings, technical manuals, instructions, standards, and specifications to perform system installation/removal/upgrade activities.
  • Under supervision perform cableways, connectors (trainee), fire watch, confined space, and may have some special quals (i.e.: Fiber Handler, Shipyard Competent Person, Paint sampling, etc.).
  • Read and interpret installation drawings and cable run sheets with assistance.
  • Fabricate various connectors by soldering and/or crimping for navigation, communication and power equipment.
  • Constructs components, subunits, or simple models or adapts standard equipment.
  • May troubleshoot and correct malfunctions.
  • Follows specific layout and scientific diagrams to construct and package simple devices and subunits of equipment.
  • Lead crew or mentor junior staff under general supervision.
  • Conduct site inspections, manage small project milestones, and ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Check the quality of other workers' output, and coordinate team workflows.
  • Perform complex non-routine tasks, test and troubleshoot advanced systems.
  • Conducts various tests or experiments which may require minor modifications in test setups or procedures as well as subjective judgments in measurement; selects, sets up, and operates standard test equipment and records test data.

SUMMARY:

The Engineering Technician IV reports to the Program Manager and will perform assignments that directly and indirectly support system installation and integration on board US Coast Guard Boats and Cutters. Receives initial instructions, equipment requirements, and advice from supervisor or engineer as needed; performs recurring work independently; Performs at this level or a combination of such typical duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, AND LICENSURE:
  • Must be a US citizen and possess or be able to obtain/maintain a SECRET clearance.
  • High School diploma, 4 years’ experience in US Coast Guard or US Navy C4I system installation integration support, US Coast Guard preferred.
  • Or US Coast Guard or Navy “C” or “A” school, 4-year experience in US Coast Guard or US Navy C4I system installation integration support, US Coast Guard preferred.
  • NavSea Cableway and/or connector certification are desired but not required.
  • Experience with Cable Fabrication (Multi-pin, RF, Network, Power, Fiber, Mil-spec, or serial cable assemblies).
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Must be highly organized and have excellent oral and written communication skills in order to interface with personnel and other government agencies at all levels.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Must be able to understand and interpret Engineering Drawings.
  • Must demonstrate thorough knowledge of Microsoft applications (MS Word, PowerPoint). Solid Excel experience is a must.
  • Its desired but not required to have proficiency in operation of warehouse equipment to include pallet jacks and forklifts.
  • Ability to Travel between 60% and 75% annually.

  • Work in the kneeing position and layout of cable runs that are under false decking.
  • Carry 50lbs. The employee can be lifting 25lbs to 50lbs 5 – 10% of the day, carrying 10 to 40lbs throughout the ship 25 to 50% of the day or pushing and pulling while running cable or installing equipment up to 80% of the day.
  • Be on their feet in a standing, crouching or walking position up to 90% of the day.
WORK AUTHORIZATION/SECURITY CLEARANCE:

DoD Secret or higher security clearance, or the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance. U.S. Citizenship is required.ADDITIONAL QUALIFYING FACTORS:As a condition of employment, must pass a pre-employment drug screening, as well as have acceptable reference and background check results.
