Job summary

Particle Measuring Systems seeks an Engineering Technician III in Niwot, CO. The role is 100% in-office in an engineering laboratory supporting sustaining engineering and new product commercialization.

You will assemble, test, calibrate and troubleshoot electro-optical systems, working with laser and metrology equipment, and collaborating with R&D and manufacturing teams to meet project goals.

Qualifications

  • Associates degree in Electronics/optics technology with 10+ years of experience (military training acceptable).
  • Proficient with MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
  • Experience with electronics troubleshooting and surface mount re-work.
  • Proficient with oscilloscopes, multimeters, laser power meters and related tools.
  • Strong data analysis, reporting and technical documentation skills.
  • Strong problem solving and ability to learn new technical information.
  • Customer-oriented and effective team-based interpersonal skills.
  • Familiarity with SolidWorks and 3D printing.

Responsibilities

  • Strong knowledge of lasers, optical alignment, and opto-electronics.
  • Build, test, troubleshoot, repair, and modify prototype/developmental and production electronic and optical systems.
  • Perform board-level electronics repair and SMT re-work.
  • Assist senior technicians, engineers, and scientists on projects.
  • Perform electrical, mechanical, and optical assembly of products and prototypes.
  • Conduct unit tests, calibrations and failure analysis for quality.
  • Utilize electro-optical/metrology lab equipment (LDM cameras, beam profilers, spectrophotometers).
  • Follow laser safety and Safe Operating Procedures.
  • Collaborate on cross-functional R&D projects and procedures.

Your Impact

We are looking for an Engineering Technician III who will contribute to the success of the Engineering Team, applying their expertise in engineering to support the achievement of team and company goals and deliver innovative, reliable solutions. In this role, the successful candidate will collaborate effectively with colleagues and cross-functional teams, demonstrate strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, and maintain a commitment to professional excellence, quality and continuous improvement.

The Role

As the Engineering Technician III you’ll be working as part of a team contributing to sustaining engineering and new product commercialization of company products in a research and development laboratory setting. Examples of activities include optical/laser assembly, verification test, engineering technical assistance, instrument calibration, electromechanical troubleshooting, and problem solving. This position reports to the Engineering Laboratory Manager and is instrumental in providing sustaining support of our instrument install base and contribute to our Research & Development teams for new product development.

Job Responsibilities
  • Strong knowledge of lasers, optical alignment, and opto-electronics
  • Build, test, troubleshoot, repair, and modify prototype/developmental and production electronic and optical systems independently or under the direction of more senior engineering technicians and R&D engineers
  • Performing board level electronics repair and troubleshooting surface mount component replacement.
  • Assisting more senior engineering technicians, engineers, and scientists as they create, modify, and test products/processes
  • Performing electrical, mechanical, and optical assembly of company products and prototypes
  • Performing unit assembly tests, calibrations and conduct failure analysis of electro-optic systems ensuring that quality standards are met
  • Hands-on experience utilizing electro-optical/metrology laboratory equipment (e.g., LDM cameras, beam profilers, spectrophotometers, power meters, oscilloscopes, wave meters, digital multimeters)
  • Familiarity with safe operation of laser systems and a strong appreciation for the importance of laser safety
  • Participate in cross-functional R&D projects to ensure project deliverables are met
  • Co-develop manufacturing and test procedures meeting organization and product quality and efficiency goals
  • Perform equipment set-up and preventive maintenance, developing procedures, and training other team members
  • Applying structured problem-solving and root-cause techniques to identify and resolve issues impacting performance, reliability, manufacturability, and cost
  • Apply LEAN principles to improve personal and organizational efficiency
  • Following policies and procedures to ensure a safe, positive work environment
  • Continuously evaluate processes for improvements in efficiency, quality, and safety

Required Qualifications
  • Associates degree in Electronics/optics technology with 10+ years of experience or equivalent, relevant military training. Advanced degree can compensate for 2 years of experience
  • Computer proficiency especially with MS Office suite Excel, PowerPoint, MS Word is required
  • Experience with electronics troubleshooting and surface mount re-work
  • Proficient in the operation of common troubleshooting tools including Oscilloscopes, multimeters, laser power meters, flow meters, etc
  • Proven ability to gather and analyze data, write reports, and create technical documents
  • Demonstrated problem solving and troubleshooting skills and the ability to learn new technical information
  • Sound customer orientation, and effective team based interpersonal skills
  • Familiarity with SolidWorks & 3D printing technology and operation
Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This role primarily operates in a lab environment. Must be able to sit, stand, and use a computer for extended periods of time. Occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs. may be required. Compensation & Benefits

Competitive hourly range: $30 - $43 per hour, depending on experience. Our compensation philosophy: we offer competitive pay based on market data, including local, national, and industry benchmarks. For new hires, offers are generally within the established min- to mid-point of the range for the role, with flexibility to recognize experience, skills, and education. Our approach ensures fair pay internally while remaining competitive externally and allows room for growth.
