Job summary

Power Solutions International (PSI) seeks an Engineering Technician III – Electronics in Michigan to support base engine electrical components, prototypes, and finished goods through ECO processes. You will lead assembly optimization, document work instructions, and coordinate with design for efficient production.

Responsibilities include wiring, panel assembly, tool design, fault isolation, BOM accuracy, and cross-functional collaboration with engineering, quality, and operations.

Qualifications

  • Two-year technical degree in automotive technology or 8 years of equivalent experience.
  • Experience leading projects across multiple teams in manufacturing.
  • Lean manufacturing knowledge in ISO environments.
  • Ability to read electrical and mechanical prints and use diagnostic tools (DMM, Oscilloscope).

Responsibilities

  • Assemble electrical components including wire harnesses and control panels.
  • Design tools and fixtures for prototype or production.
  • Fault isolation and troubleshooting of electrical/electro-mechanical systems.
  • Maintain BOM accuracy and document changes.
  • Provide technical support between engineering, quality, and service.
  • Create standard work instructions and NPIs.

Summary

Under the direction of the Business Unit Manager the Engineering Technician III – Electronics, provides support for the implementation of electrical components for base engines, prototypes and finished good products released by engineering through the Engineering Change Order (ECO) process. The position will manage all changes in their respective areas of responsibility by leading the optimization of product build through time studies, parts delivery, and assembly instruction creation.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Assemble electrical components including wire harnesses, control panels, electrical and mechanical interfaces using a combination of engineering released parts, prototype parts and production ready parts. All while using or creating documentation as a guide for the finished assembly state.
  • Design of tools and assembly fixtures required for prototype or production.
  • Advanced electrical and electro-mechanical fault isolation and troubleshooting skills
  • Punching, drilling, layout of control panels, subplates and related assemblies
  • Precision wire and cable harness design, fabrication and integration.
  • Develop assembly processes and procedures that fit in with the existing assembly processes already established in the plant.
  • Define required assembly tooling and record specifications for every required component.
  • Define and record any special orientation call outs or any special assembly notes by copious note taking and working with the design engineer.
  • Adapting hardware and working with engineering to implement BOM changes that are required for efficient assembly operation.
  • Maintain Bill of Material (BOM) accuracy.
  • Provide technical support for operations; serve as a technical liaison between product engineering, quality, and customer service engineering.
  • Assist with the creation of new standard work instructions and other process documentation based on New Product Introduction (NPI).
  • Assist with new plant layout, warehouse layout and material flow whenever applicable.
  • Interface with all departments to ensure processes and designs are compatible with new product technology.
  • Provide manufacturing and industrial expertise and advise directly or through your team, to customers, management, and other functions within PSI (production, quality, warranty) to support existing and new lean manufacturing initiatives.
  • Adhere to all safety procedures including the use of personal protective equipment and navigating the plant with alert behavior.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to investigate product/manufacturing process issues and assist in developing solutions.
  • As needed, lift, and/or carry up to 40 pounds of materials to assist in production. Learn and execute team lifts for items over 40 pounds. Adhere to all safety procedures including the use of personal protective equipment, navigating the plant with alert behavior, operating power tools and machines according to instructions, and disposing of waste properly.
  • All other duties as assigned by management.
Requirements
  • Two-year technical degree in automotive technology or another applicable engineering field or 8 years of equivalent experience; automotive assembly operations experience preferred.
  • Subject matter expertise in Manufacturing processes & Lean Manufacturing methods, tools and techniques implemented in an ISO environment.
  • Able to create manufacturing work instructions, using Microsoft products.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience with demonstrated success in leading projects across multiple teams in the manufacturing environment.
  • Full understanding of electrical hand tools, required for cut, strip, crimp and termination.
  • Full understanding of use of DMM, Oscilloscope and other electrical workbench tools.
  • Basic understanding of automated wire processing equipment
  • Established capability to understand electronic control systems, reading and interpreting electrical and mechanical prints with proven ability to use basic electronic and mechanical diagnostic tools.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 6 Sigma experience
  • Automotive assembly operations experience
  • ERP knowledge including how to effectively communicate process changes to ensure they are implemented into computer systems (Epicor a plus)
  • Experience in performing time studies and layouts for assembly processes.
  • Experience in automotive manufacturing processes
  • Experience in Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP)
  • Working knowledge of PFMEA process and documentation
  • Must be self-directed, motivated, and detail-oriented with exceptional organizational skills.
  • Work well within a team environment.
