Employee in this position will serve as an Engineering Technician II in the Asheboro District Office. Position will provide technical and functional support to District Engineer and Assistant District Engineers in administering programs of a three-county district involved in the maintenance of roads, minor improvement projects, and resurfacing projects. Primary duties include encroachment review and inspection, driveway permit review, contract administration and inspection, surveying, design, developing resurfacing contracts, and various other duties as assigned. Employee in this position may be required to serve as a project inspector or assist the survey party. These duties will include conducting independent moderate to complex inspection or survey party work for roadway and construction process and material to assure compliance with contract agreements, standard and specifications.

Candidates who possess the following are encouraged to apply. The ability to evaluate and apply engineering judgment to plan interpretation. Establish positive lines of communication between technicians, engineers, and contractors. Perform a variety of inspections and survey duties for erosion control, material testing, earthwork, asphalt, structures, and traffic control. Apply safety philosophy and program to all operations. The position requires the ability to work safely in outdoor environments with exposure to extreme temperatures and construction site hazards such as traffic, heights, and uneven terrain. Moderate physical activity including walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, and standing is required and must be able to lift 50lbs. Work may include other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Selected applicant will be expected to safely and legally operate a motor vehicle. Safety toe footwear required.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC09 $41,206 - $72,113

Management prefers applicants with the following:
  • Knowledge and understanding of NCDOT highway and bridge construction
  • Skill in evaluating and applying engineering judgment to construction plans, contract provisions, and inspection procedures
  • Experience with contract administration
  • Working knowledge and skill in the use of computer equipment, software and mathematical functions
  • Customer service experience related to resolving problems that involve explaining engineering concepts to various customer groups.
Minimum Education and Experience

Associate degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
