Job summary

The North Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking an Engineering Technician II (S) in the Asheboro Resident Engineer’s Office. The role focuses on roadway and structure inspections, project oversight, and daily documentation tasks.

Qualified candidates will have an associate degree in Engineering Technology or Survey Technology plus two years of relevant experience, familiarity with DOT contracts, and proficiency with HiCams and SharePoint. Night/weekend work may be required.

Qualifications

  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may qualify.
  • Knowledge of contracts, plans, standards, and specifications.
  • Experience inspecting, sampling, and testing materials (concrete, asphalt density).
  • Working knowledge of HiCams and SharePoint.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs and work nights/weekends as required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform roadway/structure inspection on moderate projects.
  • Supervise lower-level technicians and assist survey party when needed.
  • Complete daily diaries, sample cards, asphalt reports, NPDES reports, and monthly estimates.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports; input data using computer/iPad.
  • Operate a motor vehicle safely as required.

Description of Work

Position will serve as an Engineering Technician II in the Asheboro Resident Engineer’s Office and perform roadway/structure inspection work. Duties include project inspection of moderate projects, supervision of lower-level technicians, and may include assisting a survey party. Additional duties include completing daily dairies, sample cards, asphalt reports, NPDES reports, material received forms, survey notes, and monthly estimates. Qualified applicants should possess general knowledge and understanding of NCDOT concepts, practices, and theories. Work may include other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

The position required the ability to work safely in outdoor environments with exposure to extreme temperatures and construction site hazards such as traffic, heights, and uneven terrain. Moderate physical activity including walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, and standing is required. Must be able to lift 50lbs and work nights and weekends as required. Selected applicant will be expected to safely and legally operate a motor vehicle. Safety Toe Shoes Required.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC09 $41,206 - $72,113
Management prefers applicants with the following:
Experience with contract administration
Knowledge and understanding of contracts, plans, standards, and specifications
Experience performing inspection, sampling, and testing of materials (concrete, asphalt density) to ensure compliance with NCDOT specifications.
Working knowledge of computer equipment, (iPads, desktop), software (HiCams and Share Point) and mathematical functions
Experience maintaining neat, legible and accurate records and reports, including computer/iPad data entry

Associate degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
