Job summary

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) is seeking an Engineering Technician 5 for the District 05 Laboratory. This hybrid role covers laboratory, office, and field duties, ensuring materials meet DOTD specs and QA standards while guiding lower-level staff.

The position reports to the laboratory supervisor and may lead sub-professional engineering personnel. Salary reflects state pay with premium pay and shift differentials where applicable.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED plus three years of sub-professional engineering experience.

• Six months of sub-professional eng, heavy equipment operation, or mobile equipment maintenance plus three years of sub-professional eng experience.
• Eighteen semester hours in listed engineering/technical fields.

Responsibilities

• Laboratory data generation, organization, reporting, and audits.
• SiteManager support and SME for lab/field staff.
• Office duties, data entry, records management, timekeeping for Unit 155/170.
• Laboratory coordination: equipment calibration, maintenance, testing.
• Quality assurance: review sampling, testing and QA activities.
• Field investigations, soil surveys, construction verification, acceptance measurements, training.

This Engineering Technician 5 serves in the District 05 Laboratory and performs advanced sub-professional engineering work involving laboratory testing, field operations, materials quality assurance, and project documentation.

This is a hybrid position requiring a combination of laboratory, office, and field duties throughout the district. The position reports directly to the laboratory supervisor and assists with ensuring construction and maintenance materials comply with DOTD specifications, quality assurance requirements, and established testing procedures.

The position may also serve as a lead worker, providing technical guidance, training, and functional direction to lower-level personnel engaged in sub-professional engineering work.

• Possession of a high school diploma or GED plus three years of sub-professional engineering experience; OR
• Six months of experience in sub-professional engineering, heavy mobile equipment operation, or mobile equipment maintenance plus three years of sub-professional engineering experience; OR
• Eighteen semester hours in one of the following specialized fields: architecture, cartography, construction management, construction technology, drafting, engineering, engineering graphics, engineering technology, industrial technology, landscape architecture, math, or physics.

Job Duties:

• Laboratory Data Management:Oversees laboratory data generation, organization, reporting, and project audits.
• SiteManager:Supports system implementation and serves as a subject matter expert for laboratory and field personnel.
• Office & Administrative Operations:Performs general office duties, correspondence, data entry, reports, records management, supply inventory, safety meeting documentation, and vehicle reporting. Serves as the principal timekeeper for Unit 155 (Laboratory) and backup timekeeper for Unit 170 (Design).
• Laboratory Coordination:Coordinates technicians and oversees equipment calibration, maintenance, certification, and materials testing.
• Quality Assurance:Reviews sampling and testing requirements, reports, and DOTD/FHWA quality assurance activities.
• Field & Technical Operations:Performs field investigations, soil surveys, construction verification, acceptance measurements, and technical training.

Position Specific Details:

• Appointment Type: Probational, Promotional. Detail to Special Duty, Job Appointment
• Work Schedule: Monday-Friday from 7:45 AM to 4:15 PM
• Compensation:The bi-weekly salary for this position is $1,923.20. This position also qualifies for $2.00 per hour Premium Pay and a $2.00 per hour Shift Differential for each hour worked.
