Black & Veatch is seeking a Civil Staff Engineering Technician – Water to support multidisciplinary project teams within the Government & Communities Market Sector. This position will contribute to Water and Industrial Water infrastructure projects, supporting the development of critical infrastructure for communities today and into the future.
About the Role
The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with civil design, CAD/BIM, and site development and be comfortable working with engineering teams to develop high-quality technical deliverables.
Responsibilities
- Develop and modify civil engineering drawings and technical deliverables for Water and Industrial Water projects.
- Create site development plans using industry-standard design software such as Autodesk Civil 3D and/or Bentley MicroStation.
- Support design activities involving grading, drainage, erosion control, roadways, fencing, and underground utilities.
- Apply established engineering principles, design standards, applicable codes, and company procedures to project deliverables.
- Review project requirements and determine appropriate formats and content for technical deliverables.
- Review design inputs and coordinate information to ensure consistency and accuracy.
- Apply quality-control processes to drawings and project deliverables.
- Assist with design calculations, material quantities, estimates, and project records.
- Review drawings and deliverables prepared by other team members when required.
- Coordinate with engineers, designers, technicians, and other disciplines to exchange project information.
- Provide technical guidance to less-experienced engineering technicians and professionals as needed.
- Help define work assignments and maintain project schedules.
- Support field activities and provide technical assistance when required.
- Apply sound judgment when interpreting design inputs and developing moderately complex deliverables.
- Stay current with new technologies, design tools, and industry processes.
- Support continuous improvement and change-management initiatives.
- Ensure project deliverables comply with applicable codes, standards, quality requirements, and project specifications.
Qualifications
- Experience in civil engineering design, drafting, or engineering technology.
- Hands-on experience with Autodesk Civil 3D and/or Bentley MicroStation.
- Knowledge of civil site development principles.
- Experience creating and modifying engineering drawings and technical documentation.
- Ability to interpret engineering plans, specifications, standards, and design inputs.
- Understanding of civil design elements such as grading, drainage, utilities, roadways, or erosion control.
- Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary engineering and design teams.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
Required Skills
- Experience supporting Water, Wastewater, or Industrial Water infrastructure projects.
- Experience with underground utilities, stormwater, drainage, grading, and site development.
- Experience with BIM, 3D modeling, or digital design tools.
- Experience with design calculations, quantity takeoffs, and material estimates.
- Experience reviewing technical drawings and project deliverables.
- Experience providing technical guidance to junior technicians or designers.
Pay range and compensation package
Onsite in Phoenix, AZ – 5 days per week. Candidates must be located within 50 miles of the Phoenix office. This is a Temp-to-FTE opportunity with the potential for long-term employment. The position works closely with engineers, designers, technicians, and multidisciplinary project teams.
