BERKELEY COUNTY GOVERNMENT in Moncks Corner seeks an Engineering Technician who performs construction observation for conformance with plans, conducts post-construction inspections of stormwater facilities, and assists in planning for in-house projects.

The role requires an associate degree in civil engineering or related field and several years of related experience, with a valid SC driver's license; GIS or AutoCAD Civil 3D knowledge is a plus.

Qualifications

  • Associates degree in Civil engineering or related field; and four years of related technical experience; or equivalent combination of experience, training, or education.
  • Valid South Carolina driver's license with safe driving record.

Responsibilities

  • Perform interim, final and warranty inspections on site work, roadways and stormwater systems for compliance.
  • Prepare inspection reports for developers, contractors and other divisions.
  • Assist in the preparation of maps, databases and plans.
  • Review as-built drawings for conformance with design plans and reports.
  • Interact with contractors, consultants, developers, utilities, regulatory agencies and the public.
  • Maintain engineering/construction data, reports and systems.

Job description

This position works under moderate supervision and typically performs construction observation for conformance with approved plans, post construction inspection of stormwater facilities, and/or development of plans for projects designed in-house; and deals courteously and professionally with coworkers and the public.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Performs interim, final and warranty inspections on site work, roadways and stormwater systems for compliance with regulations, standards and approved plans.
  • May assist in surveys for roadway and storm drainage feasibility.
  • Independently prepares inspection reports for distribution to developers, contractors and other divisions.
  • Assists in the preparation of maps, databases and plans.
  • Reviews as-built drawings for conformance with design plans and consistency with construction observations and reports.
  • Interacts with contractors, consultants, developers, utilities, regulatory agency representatives and the general public.
  • Prepares, organizes and maintains engineering/construction field and office data, reports and systems.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Associates degree in Civil engineering or related field; and
  • Four (4) years of related technical experience;
  • Or equivalent combination of experience, training, or advanced education may be accepted;
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license for South Carolina with safe driving record;
Engineering Technician 2 (118):
  • Six (6) years of related technical experience;
Engineering Technician 3 (119):
  • Eight (8) years of related technical experience;
Special Requirements:
  • SCDHEC Erosion Prevention & Sediment Control Inspector Certification preferred;
  • SCDOT ART Certification desired;
  • GIS and AutoCAD Civil 3D knowledge a plus;
  • Departmental testing may be administered during interview;
  • A criminal background check will be completed on selected applicant if a current one (less than 3 years old) is not on file.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of engineering principles especially those pertaining to roadways and stormwater.
  • Knowledge of personal computers, including Word, Excel and a commonly accepted engineering application.
  • Skilled in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to manage inventory and property.
  • Ability to use or repair medium equipment and machinery.

This position requires the employee to reach with hands and arms; stand; use hands to handle, feel, grasp or operate objects, tools or controls; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; use mental acuity and repetitive motion; and walk, talk and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to forty (40) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

The work is regularly performed in a safe and secure work environment that may periodically have unpredicted requirements or demands. Thirty-seven and one half (37.5) hours per week. The normal work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. with the ability to work after hours when necessary. Scheduled hours/days, job location, duties and any other information contained herein is subject to change. May be required to work extra hours and to perform extra or different duties during emergency situations.
