Job summary

Genex Systems in Dyersburg, TN is hiring an Engineering Technician to support NRCS fieldwork, surveying, and inspection of conservation and watershed projects in the region. You will work with landowners, local governments, and NRCS engineers to develop and maintain design drawings and data modules.

The role requires proficiency with AutoCAD/Civil 3D and surveying gear, plus strong communication and safety practices. Field duties include outdoor work and travel to site locations as needed.

Qualifications

• Ability to interpret engineering drawings and explain them clearly to contractors, landowners, regulators, and government partners.
• Ability to use AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and similar technical drawing software.
• Ability to independently download, analyze, and work with survey data to produce contour maps, profile views, and section views.
• Experience using and troubleshooting surveying equipment (self-leveling levels, total stations, GPS units, data collectors).
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Working knowledge of OSHA construction safety rules, and willingness to follow and reinforce them on site.
• Comfortable working outdoors at active construction sites and traveling as a passenger in ATVs/UTVs to reach remote project areas.
• Proficient with SharePoint, Microsoft Excel/Access, and similar office and field data systems.

Job description

Help keep West Tennessee's farmland, waterways, and flood-control infrastructure safe and productive. Genex Systems is hiring an Engineering Technician to support the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Dyersburg, TN, working alongside landowners, local governments, and NRCS engineers to design, build, and maintain conservation and watershed structures that protect land and communities for the long term.

About the Work

NRCS partners with farmers, ranchers, and local communities on voluntary conservation efforts across every Tennessee county, technical assistance that has supported landowners for roughly 90 years under the agency's "keeping working lands in working hands" approach. A core piece of that work is the agency's Watershed Protection and Flood Prevention Operations Program, which addresses erosion, flooding, and sediment through structures like flood-control dams, levees, and grade-stabilization projects built and maintained in partnership with state and local governments. This role puts you in the field on that mission, from surveying potential project sites to inspecting active construction, in the Dyersburg area.

What You'll Do

• Inventory and evaluate potential conservation project sites and complete engineering surveys to support new designs.
• Help develop, modify, and complete engineering drawings and specifications, including standardized NRCS designs, using AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and similar drafting software.
• Perform construction layout surveys, download and analyze survey data, and produce contour maps, profiles, and cross-sections.
• Inspect active construction projects, verify materials meet specifications (including site visits to quarries to confirm size and quality), and document findings in job diaries.
• Track project quantities and flag potential overruns, coordinating daily with engineers, geologists, and other team members on progress, problems, and needed design or cost changes.
• Confirm that construction work follows contract specifications and applicable state and federal permit requirements and maintain the records that document that compliance.
• Explain drawings and project details to contractors, landowners, regulators, and local government partners, representing the project clearly and professionally in the field.

Nice to Have (Preferred)

• Formal coursework or prior hands-on experience with AutoCAD/Civil 3D.
• Background in civil engineering technology, land surveying, or construction inspection.
• Experience with dam safety, watershed, or flood-control construction projects specifically.
• Familiarity with Tennessee/federal environmental permitting bodies (e.g., state environmental agencies, the Army Corps of Engineers, TVA).

Compensation & Benefits

Compensation = $27.43/ hour

Health and Welfare Benefit = $5.09/ hour

Location & Work Arrangement

This is a full-time, on-site field position based in Dyersburg, TN, supporting NRCS project sites in the surrounding area. Expect regular travel to active construction sites and survey locations within the region.

Additional Requirements

• Ability to pass a USDA background check.
• Must possess a valid driver's license.
