Job summary

Jobtailor is seeking a senior Substation Protection & Control Design Lead in the United States (Tennessee). You will head a multidisciplinary team through proposal to as-built stages, ensuring design concurrence and compliance with standards.

You will develop relay protection schemes, establish control philosophies, and produce engineering calculations and procurement specs. Strong leadership, communication, and mentoring are essential for success.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from ABET-accredited institution.
• 10+ years of experience in Substation Protection & Control design.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office; strong documentation skills.
• Ability to lead projects and mentor junior engineers.
• Experience coordinating multidisciplinary project teams and engineering deliverables.

Responsibilities

• Lead a team of protection & control engineers, technicians, and drafters through project life cycles.
• Coordinate with Substation Physical Engineering, Relay Settings, and other groups for design concurrence.
• Design substation protection and control systems per codes and client standards.
• Develop relay protection schemes and control philosophies; perform engineering calculations.
• Create equipment specifications for procurement, design scopes, and cost estimates.
• Lead QA/QC processes including technical reviews of design packages.
• Mentor junior engineers and provide technical oversight on calculations and drawings.
• Engage with clients and vendors in meetings and site visits to gather and deliver data.

Job description

• Lead a team of protection & control engineers, engineering technicians, and drafting technicians from project proposal through project as-built stage
• Coordinate with Substation Physical Engineering, Relay Settings, and other groups to ensure design concurrence
• Design substation protection and control systems using applicable codes and client standards
• Develop protective relaying and control system designs for transmission and distribution substations
• Develop relay protection schemes, relay settings criteria, control philosophies, and associated engineering calculations
• Create equipment and material specifications for procurement, design scopes, and cost estimates
• Complete conceptual protection and control designs and layouts for new and existing substation facilities
• Prepare support documentation for procurement, construction, commissioning, and system operation/maintenance
• Lead or participate in client meetings and job site visits to collect or deliver design and engineering data
• Coordinate with multidisciplinary engineering teams, clients, vendors, and contractors to execute projects and resolve technical issues
• Lead and ensure compliance with QA/QC processes, including technical review and approval of engineering design packages
• Mentor and provide technical oversight to junior engineers and designers, reviewing calculations, drawings, and specifications

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline from an ABET accredited institution
• 10+ years of experience in Substation Protection & Control design engineering
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
• Excellent document management and organization skills
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
• Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines simultaneously
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment and interact professionally with clients and stakeholders
