ob Description:

DTN is seeking an experienced, hands‑on

Engineering Manager

to lead the engineering team responsible for building the foundational capabilities of our Operational Decisioning Platform (ODP).

The DTN Operational Decisioning Platform is an internal platform that packages cloud infrastructure into purpose‑built, higher‑level capabilities so that our engineers, solutions teams, and customers can build data products, applications, and AI‑powered tools without managing the underlying cloud infrastructure themselves.

The ODP Platform team builds the foundational layer that other teams rely on, including APIs, software development kits (SDKs), command‑line interfaces (CLIs), developer tooling, and managed services. Much of this work is greenfield, providing an opportunity to shape the architecture, engineering practices, and long‑term evolution of a critical enterprise platform.

This is a hands‑on engineering leadership role combining people management, technical direction, platform delivery, and operational ownership. As a player/coach, you will guide the engineers building complex distributed systems, partner closely with Architecture, Product, and platform consumers, and establish the engineering quality and operational rigor required to deliver secure, reliable, and reusable capabilities at scale.

Engineering Leadership and Team Development

Lead and manage a team of platform engineers across multiple experience levels, with responsibility for hiring, onboarding, performance management, professional development, and day‑to‑day delivery.

Coach, mentor, and grow engineers while establishing a healthy, collaborative, high‑accountability engineering culture.

Set and maintain high standards for engineering quality, technical execution, operational discipline, and continuous improvement.

Serve as a hands‑on technical leader who can engage deeply in architectural discussions, critically evaluate designs, and help engineers navigate complex technical tradeoffs.

Platform Architecture and Technical Direction

Own the platform’s technical direction in partnership with senior engineers and architecture stakeholders.

Guide the design and implementation of foundational, distributed, multi‑account cloud systems built on AWS.

Oversee the development of developer‑facing APIs, SDKs, CLIs, tooling, and managed services that enable other engineering teams to build on the platform.

Lead foundational distributed‑systems engineering efforts involving secure cross‑account communication, multi‑tenant isolation, provisioning, and lifecycle automation.

Develop platform abstractions that allow engineers and solutions teams to work with purpose‑built operational capabilities rather than raw cloud infrastructure.

Guide architectural decisions for new and evolving platform capabilities, including substantial greenfield development.

Ensure platform architecture supports scalability, security, maintainability, and long‑term reuse across multiple products and teams.

Platform Adoption and Developer Experience

Build a shared platform that internal engineering and solutions teams actively want to use and contribute to.

Drive an approach in which reusable platform capabilities emerge from real engineering and customer requirements.

Establish practices and incentives that encourage teams to consume, improve, and contribute to shared platform components.

Make reuse the default by developing capabilities that improve developer productivity and reduce duplicated engineering effort.

Partner with Product to deliver visible, usable milestones, including a developer portal, technical documentation, and initial productized platform capabilities.

Incorporate feedback from internal and external platform stakeholders into technical priorities and the product roadmap.

Own the platform’s operational contract, ensuring that security, isolation, reliability, and observability guarantees are consistently maintained.

Establish and maintain strong cloud identity and access management, isolation boundaries, and appropriate security controls.

Guide the implementation of signed and authenticated service‑to‑service communication, least‑privilege access, and secure multi‑account architectures.

Ensure end‑to‑end observability, monitoring, and operational visibility are foundational platform capabilities.

Own the health of on‑call operations, incident response processes, and service‑level objectives.

Promote reliable engineering practices, including automated testing, infrastructure as code, trunk‑based development, and incremental, reversible delivery.

Balance platform availability, security, and operational requirements with the need to deliver new capabilities efficiently.

Partner closely with Architecture, Identity, Product, and Solutions/Field Engineering to ensure platform capabilities meet the needs of teams building on the platform.

Translate strategic objectives into actionable engineering roadmaps and measurable delivery milestones.

Communicate technical direction, delivery progress, dependencies, and risks to engineering leadership and cross‑functional stakeholders.

Balance speed‑to‑value with the development of durable, scalable, and reusable platform foundations.

Coordinate across engineering teams to resolve dependencies, align architectural decisions, and ensure effective delivery.

Partner with Product and other stakeholders to ensure that platform investments deliver meaningful business and developer value.

AI‑Enabled Engineering and Platform Capabilities

Champion modern AI‑assisted software development practices, including coding assistants and agentic development tools, to improve engineering productivity and team velocity.

Guide the design and integration of AI‑augmented capabilities into the platform's modular architecture.

Support platform capabilities that incorporate large language models (LLMs), AI agents, and related services.

Evaluate how emerging AI development technologies can improve engineering workflows and expand the capabilities available to platform consumers.

Engineering Experience and Leadership
  • 8+ years of software engineering experience, including at least 2 years operating at a T3 (Staff) through T5 (Principal) engineering level and at least 2 years in a technical lead or engineering management capacity.
  • Demonstrated experience shipping, operating, and supporting production software systems.
  • Experience establishing a healthy engineering culture built on accountability, collaboration, technical excellence, and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to provide credible technical leadership while managing engineering delivery, people development, and operational responsibilities.
Cloud‑Native Architecture and Distributed Systems

Strong technical foundation in AWS cloud‑native architecture and distributed systems.

Experience working with platform engineering, developer tooling, SDKs, infrastructure, or similar teams that build foundational capabilities for other engineers rather than exclusively developing end‑user features.

Strong understanding of secure multi‑account and multi‑tenant cloud architectures.

Fluency in cloud identity and access management, tenant isolation boundaries, and the security requirements associated with distributed cloud systems.

Understanding of the architecture and operational considerations involved in building scalable, secure, and reliable shared platform capabilities.

AI and Modern Engineering Practices

Familiarity with modern AI development toolkits and AI‑assisted engineering workflows, including coding assistants and agentic development tools.

Understanding of how AI‑augmented capabilities, including LLMs, agents, and related services, can be incorporated into modular platform components.

Ability to guide engineers in adopting AI‑assisted development practices that improve productivity without compromising engineering quality.

Strong communication, collaboration, and stakeholder‑management skills across Engineering, Product, Architecture, and Go‑to‑Market organizations.

Ability to communicate complex technical decisions, architectural tradeoffs, delivery progress, and risks to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.

Experience building or operating a multi‑tenant SaaS platform, cross‑account control plane, or internal developer platform at scale.

Familiarity with a modern cloud platform technology stack, including TypeScript, Node.js, Terraform, serverless technologies, container services, managed data stores, and cloud security primitives.

Experience developing and operating reusable APIs, SDKs, CLIs, developer portals, and shared platform services.

Experience driving adoption of internal developer platforms and increasing reuse of shared components across engineering teams.

Demonstrated success establishing platform capabilities that improve developer productivity and reduce duplicated engineering effort.

Experience working within a forward‑deployed or solutions‑engineering model in which engineers embedded with customers consume shared platform capabilities.

Experience with complex provisioning and lifecycle automation, secure cross‑account communication, and multi‑tenant infrastructure.

Familiarity with modern engineering delivery practices, including trunk‑based development, infrastructure as code, automated testing, and incremental, reversible releases.

Experience working in operationally complex or data‑intensive industries such as energy, logistics, weather, or agriculture.
