Job description

HDR is currently seeking an Engineering Principal for our rapidly‑growing Colorado building engineering team. This key leadership role is part of our integrated Architecture/Engineering practice in Denver, Colorado. The role involves leading multidisciplinary engineering teams, engaging with architectural and engineering designers, and adding value to the project delivery process.

Primary Duties

• Play a significant role in business development efforts and grow HDR’s market share in specific A/E markets using expertise and professional network.
• Provide senior‑level project leadership in your engineering discipline and areas of market expertise.

Business Development Responsibilities

• Build and maintain executive‑level client relationships and serve as Client Manager for key/strategic accounts.
• Develop and execute market sector strategies, identify target clients, and pursue high‑value expansion opportunities.
• Lead go/no‑go evaluations, pursuit strategy, and proposal development for strategic and must‑win opportunities.
• Collaborate with HDR Architecture and Engineering teams on project pursuits.
• Participate in discipline‑level and project‑level scope/fee development for project pursuits.
• Participate in project interviews as an engineering leader.
• Assist in attracting, recruiting, and hiring outstanding new team members to strengthen the practice.
• Represent HDR through active participation in the professional community to build reputation.
• Perform additional duties as needed for the advancement of HDR’s stature and market penetration.
• Demonstrate exceptional leadership and maintain the standard of practice for world‑class project execution.
• Take roles as Project Manager, Senior Engineer, and/or Engineer‑of‑Record on selected projects.
• Serve as a senior technical advisor to multiple projects involving complex technical challenges.
• Conduct QC and technical reviews and provide guidance on active projects.
• Mentor and coach team members on nuances of your professional markets.

Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:

• Degree in Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, or Architectural Engineering.
• Substantial engineering experience, project history, and professional network in Colorado and beyond in one or more of these market sectors: higher education, hospitality/hotels, healthcare, aerospace, commercial real estate, mission‑critical facilities, aviation.
• Natural predisposition to, and demonstrable success in, architecture/engineering business development in Colorado.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
• 15 years related experience.
• Minimum 7 years of project management experience.
• Professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position (e.g., PE or P.Eng).
• Experience with MS Office and MS Project (Access experience a plus).
• Demonstrated leadership, business development, and strategic planning skills.
