ABOUT KOHO
We’re on a mission to make financial services better for every Canadian. That means no hidden fees, no predatory interest rates - just financial products designed to help our users spend smart, save more, and build real wealth. We’re a performance organization with a strong heart: we care deeply about outcomes, and everything ties back to our mission - to financially empower a generation of Canadians.
At KOHO, we’re not your average 9-5. We believe real impact comes from people who are trusted, empowered, and supported to do their best work - without sacrificing their lives to do it. We prioritize work-life integration, not just work-life balance. That means asynchronous collaboration, flexible hours, and a remote-first setup built around autonomy and high trust.
KOHO is entering its next chapter - leaner, smarter, more AI-integrated. We’re building for impact, not bureaucracy. If you thrive in environments that value clarity, ownership, and bold thinking, you’ll fit right in.
ABOUT THE ROLE
Ready to Shape the Platform Behind KOHO's Products?
As Engineering Manager, Platform, you'll lead a full-stack platform team that owns KOHO's mobile and web platform (how our mobile app gets released and our frontend developer tooling), internal tooling and the risk domain. This is a unique opportunity to lead a team that spans platform and feature development, building the foundations other teams rely on while supporting user-facing functionality such as login and access management.
This is a role for someone who thrives in high-impact technical environments, turns ambiguous requirements into concrete solutions, and builds high-performing teams.
You'll report directly to the Senior Manager, Platform Engineering, collaborate closely with peer platform and feature teams, and manage key stakeholders including Risk, Product, and Security. Your team will also share ownership of our authentication and authorization systems, working hand in hand with the team that leads that space.
- Build and lead a high-performing platform team: Manage a team of full-stack engineers (employees and partner contractors), set clear expectations, create real career growth paths, and maintain a culture of ownership and continuous improvement
- Own the Mobile and Web platform: Lead how our mobile app gets released, from build pipelines and release trains to app store submissions, phased rollouts, and feature flagging, and keep our web platform healthy and scalable
- Raise frontend developer experience, with AI at the core: Invest in frontend tooling, shared components, CI/CD, testing, and AI-assisted workflows so engineers across KOHO can build, test, and release with confidence
- Own internal tooling for the organization: Deliver and maintain the internal tools our operations, support, and business teams rely on, treating them as products with real users and clear quality bars
- Own the risk domain: Lead your team's ownership of risk-related systems and experiences, partnering with Risk and Compliance stakeholders to balance user experience, operational efficiency, and regulatory expectations
- Manage key vendors: Own relationships with third-party vendors in your domain, from evaluation and integration through performance, cost, contract renewals, and migrations when needed
- Own stability & production health: Keep your team's systems reliable through strong observability, a healthy support rotation, effective incident response, and steady reduction of tech debt
- Collaborate across the platform: Work closely with the authentication and authorization team on initiatives that touch the mobile and web experience, and translate Platform OKRs into a focused quarterly roadmap
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
We're looking for someone who:
- Has strong full-stack engineering roots: 5+ years building and operating production software across web or mobile frontends and backend services, with enough hands-on depth to review designs, unblock engineers, and make sound architectural calls
- Is a proven people leader: 1-3 years managing an engineering team (3-6 people), with demonstrated success coaching engineers, managing performance, hiring, and building an inclusive, high-trust team culture
- Owns production outcomes: A track record of owning critical customer-facing or business-critical systems, setting and holding quality and reliability bars, and leading the team calmly through incidents
- Manages vendors effectively: Experience owning third-party vendor relationships, holding partners accountable to outcomes, and making clear build-versus-buy decisions
- Thrives in ambiguity: You can take high-level business objectives, structure the problem, and turn it into an actionable plan when requirements are not clearly defined
- Balances strategy with execution: You can shape a roadmap and improve team process, then dive deep to unblock a tricky implementation or production issue
- Communicates with exceptional clarity: You explain technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders, write clear docs, and build strong relationships with Product, Design, Risk, and peer engineering teams
WHAT SETS YOU APART
- You’ve owned mobile release and platform engineering: Experience with mobile CI/CD, release automation, app store processes, and frontend build tooling at consumer scale
- You’ve built internal tools people love: You’ve delivered internal platforms or admin tooling that measurably improved how operations, support, or business teams work
- You’ve worked in risk, identity, or auth domains: Experience in financial services, payments, fraud, identity verification, or authentication and authorization (e.g., OAuth/OIDC, SSO, MFA), where risk, security, and auditability shape product decisions. Nice-to-have: hands-on experience with vendors such as Onfido or Auth0
- You’re passionate about developer experience: You treat the platform as a product for internal engineers and invest in tooling, shared components, CI/CD, and self-service that make their lives better
- You’re excited about using AI to accelerate development, testing, and code review, and you help your team adopt it thoughtfully
- You’ve built teams that own their systems end to end, from design through on-call, with strong observability and feature-flagged releases
The posted salary range for this role is $160,000 – $190,000 CAD / year.
At KOHO, we are dedicated to providing pay transparency to all candidates. Compensation at KOHO is determined through various factors including but not limited to: comparable salary market data within Canada, technical skill assessment, a holistic view of previous work history, and internal pay equity with other KOHO team members.
