Job summary

A leading software development firm seeks an Engineering Manager to lead the MAAS team in delivering a cloud-style Metal as a Service platform. This role involves leading a distributed engineering team, mentoring talent, and engaging with broader teams in both the open-source community and Canonical. The ideal candidate will have experience in software delivery with Python and Golang, Linux system administration, and a strong technical aptitude for distributed systems. Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science or related field.
  • Proven experience delivering software with Python, Golang, or similar languages.
  • Experience with Linux system administration, preferably Debian or Ubuntu.

  • Ability to mentor and develop team members.

Responsibilities

Engineering Manager, MAAS – Canonical

Role Overview

As an Engineering Manager, you will lead the expanding MAAS team, delivering the Metal as a Service platform that brings cloud‑style, on‑demand API provisioning to private bare‑metal infrastructure. MAAS is a rapidly evolving stack written in Python and Go, spanning hardware detection, provisioning, web interface, API, and CLI.

Responsibilities
  • Lead a distributed engineering team organized by time zone (Americas, EMEA, etc.)
  • Develop and mentor talent through coaching, feedback, and career planning
  • Manage expectations with other engineering teams, senior management, and external stakeholders
  • Advocate and advance modern software development practices
  • Participate in engineering process through code and architectural reviews
  • Engage with broader teams at Canonical, the open‑source community, and partners
  • Travel to internal and external global events for 4 to 6 weeks per year
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science or related field
  • Proven experience delivering software with Python, Golang, or similar languages
  • Experience with Linux system administration (Debian or Ubuntu preferred)
  • Familiarity with modern Linux cloud computing technologies – networking, storage, containers, and K8s
  • Technical aptitude for complex distributed systems
  • Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills
  • Experience with agile software development methodologies
  • Ability to mentor, develop, and support team membersResult‑oriented with a personal drive to meet commitments
  • Ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events up to two weeks long
