Job summary

thyssenkrupp Bilstein of America, Inc. seeks an Engineering Manager to lead the Test and Prototype Engineering Service groups.

You will plan, procure, test, validate, and deliver prototype products, coordinating across engineering, manufacturing, quality, suppliers, and project management teams. You will drive testing strategy, maintain cost targets, and deliver on milestones for product launches with a customer-focused approach.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Eng Tech, Manufacturing or related field.
  • 5–10 years in product development, testing, prototype management, or engineering.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings with GD&T and measurement data.
  • Experience in automotive/manufacturing, including prototype methods.
  • Familiarity with materials and coatings used in automotive parts.
  • Experience in Tier1 automotive testing preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Prototype and Test teams; ensure high-quality prototypes meet specs.

Our Aftermarket operations are based out of Poway, CA and our Motorsports operations are based out of Mooresville, NC.

Summary

The Engineering Manager is responsible for the Test and Prototype Engineering Service groups. Manager leads the planning, procurement, testing, validation, and delivery of prototype products. Manager will ensure that product testing is executed to meet requirements relative to cost, timing and internal/external specifications. This role will be responsible for developing testing/prototype strategies, procedures, and coordinate engineering service functions across cross functional teams and all stakeholders within the organization. The position is responsible for driving sustainable excellence in both the building of prototypes and execution of product testing by providing technical leadership and maintaining customer focus.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Oversee and provide leadership to the Prototype team and ensures all prototype products manufactured to strict design requirements while ensuring high quality standards and adherence to required completion timing.
  • Ensure prototypes comply with engineering specifications, regulatory requirements, and customer expectations.
  • Prioritizes and schedules all prototype build requests and ensures customer delivery schedules are met.
  • Analyzes work orders, written specifications, drawings, rough sketches, and verbal instruction to plan the layout and determine sequence of prototype operation.
  • Evaluates prototype components for feasibility of internal manufacturing; coordinates with internal and external customers (e.g. machine shops) to prepare prototype components for manufacturing.
  • Interfaces with Engineers and all stake holders regarding product information such as design, performance, durability, and cost of materials to be used to fabricate product.
  • Oversee and provide leadership to the Test team to ensure that all testing is conducted per customer requirements for test specifications, cost and timing to complete.
  • Support product launches by ensuring validation milestones are achieved on schedule.
  • Prepare technical reports and present test results to leadership and customers.
  • Analyze test data, identify root causes of failures, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Prepares, manages and executes to Prototype Lab and Test fiscal year budgets.
  • Manage prototype and test schedules, equipment, and resources.
  • Designs fixtures, tooling, and experimental parts to meet special engineering needs.
  • Coordinate activities between engineering, manufacturing, quality, suppliers, and project management teams.
  • Provide cost estimates for all prototype and test activities and adhere to cost estimates.
  • Drive continuous improvement in testing methodologies and prototype processes.
  • Manages the relationship with interna/lexternal customers to ensure prototype and test meet scheduled deadlines.
  • Maintains a safe working environment by complying with all safety and environmental policies in the workplace. Advocates for and promotes a safe work environment by reporting Near Misses and/or other safety and environmental hazards, wearing all required PPE and encouraging others to do the same.
  • Performs all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Manufacturing, or a related technical field, preferred.
  • 5-10 years of experience in product development, testing, prototype management, or engineering.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and associated GD+T and generate measurement data supporting manufactured components and assemblies meet drawing requirements.
  • Considerable experience in an automotive or manufacturing capacity performing assembly, disassembly and operating various machinery.
  • Considerable experience in prototype manufacturing methods such as machining, welding (GMAW, GTAW, Stick) grinding, painting, etc. with ability to understand software and programming languages.
  • Understanding of material properties, characteristics, application and manufacturing of critically used materials such as steel, aluminium, sintered metals, rubber and plastic components, and various coatings.
  • Experience in testing at a Tier1 Automotive level highly preferred.
  • Strong background in automotive and suspensions preferred.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot equipment issues.
  • Expert knowledge of Microsoft Office Products (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Proven ability to build strong business relationships at all levels throughout an organization.
  • Ability to coordinate a project from conceptualization based on project requirements including budgeting, time planning, hardware requirement definition and materials acquisition, to execution and operation.
  • Demonstrates a strong attention to detail with excellent organization skills with experience in and capable of working in a fast-paced business environment with tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrated high level of initiative and drive. Possesses a natural sense of ownership for projects and responsibilities.
  • Makes decisions and commits to a course of action with appropriate information and recognizes uncertainty of success; weighs and manages risk in decision making.
  • Highly organized with ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Exhibits a high level of integrity and ethics through fair and ethical behaviors in all activities; maintains accountability for performance.
  • Proven experience developing work processes to improve outcomes for the team/customers.
