Job description

Engineering Manager (f/m/d) - Ruby on Rails Development

At Lanes & Planes, we are a lean, minimalistic, and fun team of developers who value good communication, responsibility, learning, pragmatism, teamwork, and developer happiness. We’re not fans of bureaucracy, buzzwords, or unnecessary meetings. Instead, we prioritize collaboration, mutual respect, and a commitment to producing high-quality code.

Your Position

As the Engineering Manager (f/m/d), you will guide and inspire a team of 5-7 talented Ruby on Rails developers. Your mission is to foster a collaborative, growth‑oriented environment where team members can thrive while ensuring our code quality and projects exceed expectations. You will lead by example, contribute to the codebase, and champion best practices in development and team management.

Your everyday work routine
  • Leadership & Mentorship: You can juggle and prioritize multiple projects. You are a good judge of when and how to say “no” to requests. Provide guidance, mentorship, and support to your team, fostering an environment of trust, learning, and collaboration.
  • Hands‑On Development: Lead by example through active participation in coding, testing, and reviewing our codebase.
  • Code Quality Assurance: Maintain and elevate code quality standards within the team. Conduct code reviews and ensure robust testing processes are followed.
  • Iterative collaboration: Our product and engineering teams work iteratively to focus on delivering business value quickly and efficiently. We follow the principles of KISS and YAGNI, and are always pragmatic in our decision‑making.
  • Problem Solving: You don’t stop at patching bugs. You also ask “How can we avoid this in the future?”. Take ownership of issues, investigate root causes, and implement sustainable fixes to maintain system reliability.
  • Team Culture: Advocate for a fun and fulfilling workplace. Proactively address challenges to maintain developer happiness and productivity. Recognize and cater to the strengths of specific developers and pave the way for them to perform at their best. E.g. you know who is good at investigating bugs, who works better uninterrupted, who is good at working with 3rd party APIs, etc.
  • Encouraging Open Ideas: You facilitate good ideas from everyone without squashing opinions of anyone. You can articulate your reasonings.
  • Clear & Inclusive Communication: You are an excellent communicator in both speaking and written form. You can conduct a conversation involving both technical and non‑technical personnel and still keep everyone on the same page.
  • Maintaining Project Momentum: You recognize and fix bottlenecks. You keep things constantly moving. You are responsive.
  • Async Communication: “we prefer the async way via Slack”: 90% of communication is async and in written form (via Slack and GitHub).
Your profile
  • Technical Expertise:
    • 6+ years of experience as a Senior Ruby on Rails Developer.
    • Proven experience in Full‑Stack Development and diverse project environments, preferably in startups.
    • Ideally experience in a B2B SaaS company.
  • Leadership Experience: Demonstrated ability to lead and inspire teams, preferably with prior experience managing developers.
  • Soft Skills: Excellent communication skills, a collaborative mindset, and the ability to resolve conflicts constructively.
  • Passion for Quality: A commitment to high standards, including clean code, thorough testing, and continuous improvement.
  • Location Flexibility: Willing to relocate to Germany or work remotely within GMT‑0 to GMT+3.
What You Can Expect
  • You will be equipped with the latest MacBook of your liking.
  • You work with an international team with whom you can regularly exchange ideas in our Munich office or Remote.
  • Flat hierarchies and quick decisions.
  • Creative freedom and active participation in building our company.
  • Exciting team events.
  • Permanent employment with fixed salary.
  • Flexible working hours.
  • Discounted travel via L&P, e.g. for your 28‑30 days holiday per year.
  • Job bike on request.
