Position Summary

The Engineering Manager – E‑commerce & Shop, reporting to the Director of Engineering, leads the engineering team focused on our e‑commerce platform and shop and direct‑to‑consumer experiences. This role combines hands‑on technical leadership with people management, driving the development of scalable, secure, and high‑performing e‑commerce solutions that enable photographers to sell their work seamlessly. The EM partners closely with product managers, designers, and stakeholders to deliver features that directly impact revenue generation and customer satisfaction. They build and nurture high‑performing teams while maintaining technical excellence and fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities
  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of 4‑8 engineers focused on e‑commerce and shop functionality
  • Conduct regular 1:1s, performance reviews, and career development conversations
  • Foster a culture of psychological safety, collaboration, and continuous learning
  • Recruit, onboard, and retain talented engineers aligned with team needs
  • Remove blockers and create an environment where the team can do their best work
  • Own the technical execution and delivery of e‑commerce features including shopping cart, payment processing, order management, and fulfillment
  • Partner with Product Managers to translate business requirements into technical solutions
  • Ensure reliable, performant, and secure e‑commerce experiences for photographers and their customers
  • Drive improvements to conversion rates, checkout flows, and transaction success rates
  • Oversee integration with payment gateways, shipping providers, and third‑party e‑commerce tools
  • Maintain high code quality standards through code reviews, testing, and architectural guidance
  • Champion best practices in software development, security, and scalability for e‑commerce systems
  • Make informed technical decisions balancing speed, quality, and maintainability
  • Ensure PCI compliance and security standards for payment processing
  • Drive technical improvements to reduce technical debt and improve system reliability
  • Stay current with e‑commerce technologies, payment innovations, and industry trends
  • Lead sprint planning, retrospectives, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Establish and track key engineering metrics (velocity, deployment frequency, incident rates)
  • Balance feature development with maintenance, technical debt, and operational excellence
  • Drive predictable, high‑quality releases aligned with product roadmap
  • Implement and refine engineering processes that support team productivity
  • Partner with Product and Design to shape the e‑commerce product roadmap
  • Collaborate with Operations and Customer Success to understand photographer needs and pain points
  • Work with Marketing to enable promotional campaigns and pricing strategies
  • Communicate technical concepts, tradeoffs, and timelines to non‑technical stakeholders
  • Coordinate with other engineering teams on shared services and platform capabilities
  • Ensure high availability and performance of e‑commerce systems (99.9%+ uptime)
  • Own incident response and resolution for e‑commerce‑related issues
  • Drive monitoring, alerting, and observability improvements
  • Optimize for scale to handle traffic spikes during peak sales periods
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical field
  • 7+ years of software engineering experience with proven technical expertise
  • 2+ years of experience managing or leading engineering teams
  • Strong experience with e‑commerce platforms, payment systems, and transaction processing
  • Proficiency in modern web technologies (React, Node.js, Python, or similar)
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and modern infrastructure
  • Understanding of agile methodologies and software development lifecycle
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver complex software projects on time and with quality
  • Strong communication skills with ability to influence across teams
  • Track record of growing and mentoring engineers
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with payment gateway integrations (Stripe, PayPal, Square, etc.)
  • Knowledge of PCI DSS compliance and e‑commerce security standards
  • Experience in high‑growth SaaS or B2C e‑commerce environments
  • Familiarity with marketplace or creator economy platforms
  • Understanding of photographers' workflow and business needs
  • Experience with A/B testing and data‑driven product development
  • Background in microservices architecture and event‑driven systems
