Job summary

Jewelers Mutual Insurance Group in Raleigh, NC seeks a seasoned engineering leader to manage a team of engineers and own the planning, execution, and delivery of specific technical project areas.

This role blends day-to-day people leadership—hiring, coaching, and performance management—with hands-on technical ownership, translating architecture and roadmap direction from the Director, Technology into actionable team plans.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or related field or equivalent experience.
  • 5–8 years technology/engineering experience with at least 2 years in people management.
  • Proven ability to hire, coach, and develop engineers.
  • Hands-on software engineering or infrastructure experience.
  • Experience applying Agile/DevOps to plan, track, and deliver projects.
  • Strong written and verbal communication for non-technical stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Manage, coach, and develop a team of engineers, including hiring, onboarding, performance management, and career growth planning.
  • Own the planning, execution, and delivery of assigned technical project areas, translating architecture and roadmap direction from the Director, Technology into actionable team plans.
  • Set priorities and assign work across the team, balancing delivery timelines, technical quality, and team capacity.
  • Partner with product, business, and cross-functional technology stakeholders to scope requirements and remove delivery blockers.
  • Apply agile and DevOps practices to plan sprints, run stand-ups and retrospectives, and track progress against KPIs.
  • Provide hands-on technical guidance and design/code review to ensure solutions meet architecture, security, and quality standards.
  • Identify risks and technical debt within assigned project areas and proactively escalate and resolve issues.
  • Report on progress, budget, and resource needs for assigned technical areas to the Director, Technology.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field required, or equivalent experience.
  • 5-8 years of technology/engineering experience, including at least 2 years in a people-management or team-lead capacity.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and grow a team of engineers, with strong coaching, hiring, and performance management skills.
  • Hands-on technical proficiency in software engineering, systems, or infrastructure practices relevant to the assigned area.
  • Experience applying agile/DevOps methodologies to plan, track, and deliver technical projects.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Insurance industry experience.
  • Experience with cloud platforms, microservices, or modern software architecture.
  • Prior experience managing distributed or cross-functional technical teams.
