Numeric in New York is hiring its first dedicated Engineering Manager to lead our engineering teams in NYC. This is a player-coach role: you’ll manage and grow a team while staying close to code and system design to earn the trust of engineers you lead.
You’ll work on data platform, reporting engine, accounting automation, and AI-driven workflows, delivering high-quality software that helps accountants connect data and insights. In-person role.
Every business relies on accounting.
Yet most software in the space was built in the early 2000s - clunky, slow, and far behind the curve on AI. Today, accountants are facing a growing, unsolved data problem as a consequence of complexity, data, and system fragmentation - and they lack the tools to solve it.
We have strong product market fit and a growing base of customers who love our product - including Anthropic, Notion, Brex, OpenAI, Cursor, Plaid, Wealthfront, Mercury, Figma, and Asana. We’re backed by top-tier investors including Menlo Ventures, IVP, Founders Fund, and 8VC, along with founders and executives from Ramp, Segment, and other category-defining companies.
We're hiring our first dedicated Engineering Manager to help lead our engineering teams in NYC. This is a player-coach role: you'll manage and grow a team of engineers while staying close enough to the code and the system design to earn the trust of the people you lead. We're not looking for someone who manages from a distance - we're looking for someone who's done the work, still wants to be in the details when it matters, and gets energy from making other engineers better.
Data platform: Lead the team building the ingestion, transformation, and lineage infrastructure that gives accountants traceable, source-connected access to their financial data at any level of detail.
Reporting engine: Own delivery of the experience for flexibly defining, composing, and drilling into structured financial reports, from high-level projections down to individual transactions.
Accounting automation: Guide the team developing the core engine that brings structure to messy financial data, automating large swaths of manual work and turning accountants into engineers.
Workflow, AI, and user experience: Lead a team building complex, cyclical accounting workflows with dependency management, automation, and AI-native experiences - all wrapped in a product we take pride in making delightful to use.
You've managed engineers before and you genuinely enjoy it. You take pride in developing people, building trust on teams, and making hard calls on people and priorities.
You still want to be technical. You can go deep on system design, review code and architecture decisions, and earn credibility with your team by being a good collaborator.
You find learning a new, complex domain to be an exciting challenge
You combine a commitment to high quality work with a desire to win and tackle ambitious goals
You want to help build the management function here: process, rituals, and bar-setting. You can balance scaling with pragmatism about the right amount of process for the stage of growth.
You care about good abstractions and about building good product.
6+ years of experience building software, including meaningful time as a hands-on engineer
2+ years directly managing engineers, with real ownership of hiring, performance, and team output
High motivation and agency
Experience managing teams in complex, technical domains
Fintech or accounting-adjacent/fintech experience
Experience founding a business, building products from scratch, or being an early engineering hire who grew into management
A track record in hiring
We believe the best company is the one with the best ICs, and we've built a culture to maximize great work - as an EM here, your job is to protect and amplify that, not manage around it. We believe great product & engineering come from a desire to win, a deep care for the craft, and a pragmatism in shipping for overall impact.
We strongly believe we will only be successful if everyone on the team - managers included - is anchored in our core principles:
Own the Outcome: We own our results. We typically hire builders and give them large mandates with high trust. As a manager, you're responsible not just for your team's code, but for ensuring your team is solving the end problems of the users.
Brick by Brick: To win, our team needs to show up and execute in each domain every day.
Love the Game: We focus on the craft and a deep sense of giving a f*ck. We're building a company full of people who are equally engaged and motivated - that starts with how you lead.
Earn the Right: Our ability to rethink how things are done depends on the trust and reputation we build by shipping quality products and improving the lives of our users.
SALY: We refuse to accept 'Same As Last Year'. We bring fresh eyes to a stagnated and underserved domain, including in how we build and run engineering teams.
