Job description

Location & Team Gatherings

Intersect has been a fully flexible workplace since its founding in 2016. We are not work‑from‑home, hybrid, or in‑office - we are any and all of those options! Deepening social connections and offering shared experiences is a cornerstone of the way we work. We connect as a team at our Team Week experiences four times a year and at our recently established Hub locations - SF Bay Area, NYC Metro Area, NY; Denver, CO; Austin, TX; Calgary, AB; and Toronto, ON.

We are currently looking for candidates located within 60 miles of any of the listed hubs to foster more in‑person connections while maintaining our flexible remote culture.

About This Role

As part of Intersect's Engineering team, you'll lead the technical strategy and execution of a growing portfolio of natural gas power generation projects integrated with battery energy storage systems (BESS) and clean energy assets. This portfolio currently includes approximately 5 GW of reciprocating engine and gas turbine‑based generation projects at various stages of development and execution.

You'll build and scale a multidisciplinary engineering organization, establish the systems and standards that enable consistent project delivery, and provide technical leadership across development, design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and operations. This role combines strategic leadership, technical depth, and cross‑functional collaboration to help deliver reliable, scalable power infrastructure that supports Intersect's growth objectives.

Team Overview

This team plays a critical role in advancing Intersect's mission to accelerate the clean energy transition by developing and delivering large‑scale power infrastructure projects. The Engineering team partners closely with Development, Project Management, Procurement, Construction, Operations, and external partners to bring complex energy projects from concept through commissioning. Joining this team offers the opportunity to influence engineering strategy, drive innovation, and help shape the future of Intersect's growing power generation portfolio.

What You'll Do
Lead Engineering Strategy and Standards
  • Define and execute the engineering strategy for Intersect's portfolio of reciprocating engine and gas turbine‑based power generation projects.

  • Establish engineering governance frameworks, including design standards, drawing standards, calculation methodologies, document control processes, and lessons‑learned programs.

  • Develop scalable engineering workflows spanning conceptual design, FEED, detailed engineering, IFC documentation, and as‑built deliverables.

  • Balance technical rigor, project schedules, and budget objectives throughout all phases of project development and execution.

Build and Develop High-Performing Teams
  • Recruit, onboard, mentor, and retain multidisciplinary engineering talent across mechanical, electrical, civil/structural, and instrumentation and controls disciplines.

  • Foster a culture of continuous learning, collaboration, technical excellence, and peer review.

  • Provide coaching and professional development opportunities for engineers at all levels.

  • Develop and manage relationships with engineering consultants, OEM technical teams, and specialized engineering contractors.

Drive Engineering Excellence Across Projects
  • Oversee engineering execution across multiple concurrent projects at varying stages of development and delivery.

  • Review and approve critical engineering deliverables, including P&IDs, single‑line diagrams, general arrangement drawings, equipment datasheets, civil and structural designs, control narratives, and cause‑and‑effect matrices.

  • Coordinate engineering interfaces between EPC/EPCM contractors, OEMs, and internal stakeholders across Development, Development Engineering, Business Development, Procurement, and Project Management.

  • Ensure engineering scopes, resource forecasts, budgets, and change management processes are effectively tracked and communicated.

  • Support commissioning and startup activities by providing technical guidance, design clarifications, and issue resolution.

Ensure Safety, Compliance, and Reliability
  • Serve as the internal subject matter expert on applicable engineering codes, standards, and industry best practices.

  • Ensure all engineering deliverables comply with applicable local, state, national, and international requirements.

  • Lead technical due diligence efforts supporting lenders, permitting authorities, independent engineers, and other stakeholders.

  • Oversee safety and reliability studies, including HAZOP, HAZID, SIL assessments, arc flash studies, short‑circuit studies, and load flow analyses.

Advance Engineering Systems and Digital Innovation
  • Define and implement engineering software, digital platforms, and simulation tools that support project execution and organizational growth.

  • Standardize engineering templates, equipment selection criteria, specifications, and calculation packages to improve quality and reduce rework.

  • Champion digital engineering initiatives and AI‑enabled tools that improve productivity, consistency, and engineering cycle times.

Support Commercial and Procurement Decisions
  • Review EPC/EPCM agreements, OEM supply contracts, and technical schedules from an engineering risk and execution perspective.

  • Identify opportunities to improve engineering efficiency, reduce project risk, and support successful project outcomes.

  • Provide technical input during procurement activities, contract negotiations, and equipment evaluations.

What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline.

  • Master's degree or advanced technical qualification preferred.

  • 15+ years of progressive engineering experience within the power generation industry.

  • Significant experience supporting reciprocating engine and/or gas turbine power plant projects.

  • Demonstrated success leading multidisciplinary engineering teams across mechanical, electrical, civil/structural, and instrumentation and controls disciplines.

  • Experience managing multiple large‑scale projects simultaneously through development, design, construction, and commissioning phases.

  • Strong familiarity with major OEM platforms such as Caterpillar, Wärtsilä, GE, and Jenbacher/INNIO.

  • Working knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards, including NFPA, IEEE, ASME, API, and related regulatory requirements.

  • Experience leading or overseeing HAZOP, HAZID, SIL, arc flash, short‑circuit, and load flow studies.

  • Experience managing technical interfaces with EPC/EPCM contractors, OEMs, independent engineers, and project stakeholders.

  • Experience supporting commissioning, startup, and operational readiness activities.

  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license or equivalent professional accreditation preferred.

  • Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.

  • A collaborative, solutions‑oriented mindset with the ability to balance strategic thinking and practical execution.

  • A commitment to continuous improvement, operational excellence, and building high‑performing teams.
