Job summary

Westwood Professional Services, Inc. is seeking a Transmission Engineering Intern to contribute to electrical powerline design projects. You will apply Civil and Electrical coursework to real-world transmission line development for utilities, wind, solar, and government clients.

You will gain hands-on experience with ACI, IBC, NESC, and ASCE standards while supporting senior engineers in analyses, plans, specifications, and procurement documents.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in ABET-accredited undergraduate engineering program (Civil/Electrical/Structural).
• Strong verbal and written communication with clients and team.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and review construction documents including plans, profiles, bills of materials.
• Understand client interests and address concerns in project work.
• Coordinate with internal and external teams for progress.
• Travel to project sites to collect field data.

Description

The Transmission Engineering Intern will join a dynamic electric powerline design team, applying relevant Civil and Electrical coursework and experience to the engineering and design of multiple power projects. Projects range from small, quick-turnaround assignments to large, complex transmission line designs for public and private electric utilities, wind and solar developers, and government agencies. This position offers a direct opportunity to apply engineering knowledge to real-world energy infrastructure projects.

As a T&D Engineering Intern, the selected candidate will learn to apply industry standards - including ACI, IBC, NESC, and ASCE - in the engineering design process and will assist Senior Engineers in the preparation of engineering analyses, plans and specifications, and material procurement and construction documents.

Requirements

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Work with engineers to obtain training and build foundational proficiency in the use of PLS-CADD, MFAD, AutoCAD, and other design software used by Transmission Engineers.
• Prepare and review design documents for construction, including plan and profiles, structure drawings, structure layout drawings, bills of materials, and foundation design drawings.
• Develop an understanding of client interests and help identify approaches to address client concerns in the performance of project work.
• Actively coordinate with internal and external team members across power projects to ensure effective communication and project progress.
• Travel to project sites as necessary to gather field data and interface directly with clients.
• Apply applicable engineering standards (ACI, IBC, NESC, ASCE, and others) under the guidance of licensed Senior Engineers.

Required Qualifications:

• Currently enrolled in an ABET-accredited undergraduate engineering program, preferably in Civil, Electrical, and/or Structural Engineering.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with clients, management, and design team members.
• Willingness to learn in a flexible, cross-disciplinary work environment.
• Willingness to attend site visits and perform work in outdoor field conditions on occasion.
• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications:

The following qualifications are preferred but not required for consideration:

• Relevant industry experience through engineering coursework projects or prior internships in transmission, distribution, or civil/structural engineering.
• Experience with technical design software including AutoCAD, PLS-CADD, MFAD, MATLAB, or other relevant engineering tools.
