Job description

“The starting salary for this position ranges between $20.26 and $22.29 per hour, depending on experience (DOQ).”

GENERAL PURPOSE

Performs a variety of technical and administrative duties to support the City Engineer and Public Works Department. Assists in the planning, review, and construction oversight of public infrastructure projects, including roads, water systems, sewer systems, storm drainage, and other municipal facilities. Gains hands‑on experience in municipal engineering practices while contributing to the efficiency and effectiveness of city operations.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of the City Engineer/Public Works Deputy Director.

Examples of Duties
  • Assists in reviewing engineering plans, specifications, and reports for public and private development projects to ensure compliance with city standards.
  • Conducts field inspections and data collection for city infrastructure projects, including roadways, stormwater facilities, and water systems.
  • Supports GIS mapping efforts by updating utility maps and asset databases.
  • Assists in the preparation of reports, technical memorandums, and cost estimates for various engineering projects.
  • Aids in traffic studies, stormwater management evaluations, and pavement condition assessments.
  • Researches and compiles data for grant applications, funding opportunities, and project feasibility analyses.
  • Provides general administrative support, including document organization, data entry, and assisting with public inquiries regarding city engineering projects.
  • Attends project meetings and site visits with city staff, contractors, and consultants.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience

Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.

Prior experience in engineering, construction, GIS, or public works is beneficial but not required.

Additional Qualifications/Information
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and basic knowledge of CAD, GIS, or engineering software is a plus.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and technical documents.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must possess a valid Utah Driver’s License.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and conduct field inspections as needed.
Work Environment

Work is performed in both an office setting with climate control and outdoor field environments. Tasks require sitting, standing, walking, and occasional moderate physical effort such as bending, lifting, and carrying equipment. Fieldwork may include exposure to varying weather conditions, construction sites, and traffic hazards. Regular use of computers, measuring tools, and engineering software is required.
