Job summary

Collins Engineers, Inc. in Chicago, IL invites undergrad civil engineering students to join a Structural Engineering Internship for Summer 2027. The role blends office work with field experience on bridge inspections, design and load rating, under the supervision of licensed engineers.

You will assist with drafting, inspections, and related tasks, gain hands-on exposure to AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and other engineering software, and learn from a team of seasoned professionals.

Qualifications

• Junior or senior pursuing a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.
• Experience with AutoCAD, MicroStation, Blue Beam, or Civil 3D is a plus.
• Valid driver’s license is a plus.

Calling all undergrad civil engineering students! Collins is offering an opportunity for a civil engineering student to gain experience doing structural design and inspections. Our Chicago, IL office has an opening for a Structural Engineering Internship position for Summer 2027. This position will be a combination of office and time in the field. You will be able to get hands‑on experience collaborating on bridge inspections, bridge design and load rating, and working on other various tasks with our seasoned engineers. You will get the opportunity to be paired with professional licensed engineers to learn about different aspects of structural engineering.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assists engineering teams in various tasks and duties.
• Assists Engineer with research, development and design of projects.
• Assists Engineer with the preparation of engineering drawings and documents as assigned.
• Assists inspection team leaders with the preparation of inspection reports and supporting field work as assigned.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Junior or senior working towards a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited university.
• Previous software experience in AutoCAD, MicroStation, Blue Beam, or Civil 3D is a plus.
• Previous software experience in Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe PDF or other PDF editing software is a plus.
• A valid driver's license is a plus.
