Job summary

Toole Design is seeking an Engineering Intern in Columbus, OH to help design streets and public spaces. You will work with planners, engineers, and landscape architects on meaningful mobility projects across the country.

Over 8–12 weeks you’ll participate in all design phases, gain skills in 2D/3D modeling, and receive mentorship from industry leaders. This internship offers Fridays remote, and a salary range of $20.00–$24.50 per hour.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in or recently completed Civil Engineering degree.
• Ability to learn new design tools quickly.
• Interest in active transportation and public realm projects.
• Strong MS Office skills and communication.

Responsibilities

• Support design teams on public realm and active transportation projects.
• Assist in stakeholder outreach, workshops, and meetings.
• Contribute to construction documents and project administration.
• Develop skills in 2D/3D modeling and graphic outputs.

What You’ll Do

At Toole Design, our paid internship gives you real experience on meaningful work. Over 8–12 weeks, you’ll be embedded in project teams alongside planners, engineers, and landscape architects, contributing to public realm and active transportation projects from day one. You’ll take part in every phase of design, from stakeholder outreach and workshops to construction documents and administration, while attending key project meetings and site visits. Along the way, you’ll build skills in analysis, 2D/3D modeling, and illustrative graphics using tools like AutoCAD, MicroStation, the Adobe Suite, ArcMap, and QGIS. You’ll also have access to company-wide trainings and career mentorship from leaders in the field. Working closely with clients, communities, and colleagues, you’ll help shape and reimagine streets, parks, and trail systems across the country.

We are targeting a salary range of $20.00 to $24.50 per hour for this position. Interns generally work 40 hours per week, four days in the office with the option to work from home on Fridays. All Toole Design offices are bikeable, walkable, and transit-friendly—just like the infrastructure we help design.

Requirements

• Undergrads: In your 3rd year or higher of a Civil Engineering (or related) bachelor’s program
• Grad Students: Enrolled in a Civil Engineering (or related) graduate program
• Recent Grads: Degree in Civil Engineering or a related field
• Ability to quickly pick up new concepts, skills, and programs
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
• MicroStation or AutoCAD experience or willingness to learn
• Passion for active transportation
