Meet HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding

With more than 25,000 employees – including third-, fourth- and even fifth-generation shipbuilders – HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division is the largest industrial employer in Virginia. We’re the sole designer, builder and refueler of U.S. Navy nuclear aircraft carriers and one of two providers of U.S. Navy nuclear submarines. Our diverse and innovative team of professionals ranges from skilled trades to project managers, engineers and software developers to solution architects, technical subject matter experts, and system users. We collaborate together at the forefront of technology, manufacturing, and integration of the most powerful and survivable naval ships in the world.

The Role

Designs major components or major portions of a functional system to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations. Develops basic data and makes preliminary layouts, sketches, and notes necessary to present design proposal. Investigates pertinent design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials and equipment, interchangeability, replace ability, strength-weight efficiency, and contractual specification requirements and cost. Coordinates with other organizations affected by design development. Makes layouts of complex assemblies and details parts of devices, mechanisms, and structures. Checks completed layouts and drawings for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, procedures, specifications, and accuracy of calculations and dimensioning. Identifies design errors, omissions, and other deficiencies, and recommends revisions and/or improvements in design layout to responsible engineers or designers.

The Propulsion and Reactor Engineering Planning Yard (E50) is seeking a leader in design to provide comprehensive support for the E50 portfolio across multiple programs, acting as a trusted advisor to E50 management. This senior level role leads root cause analyses for systemic design issues, integrates digital tools, and resolves emergent challenges that affect design execution and downstream customers. The incumbent also strengthens NNS’s digital transformation, mentors design staff, and serves as the liaison between the Designer Discipline Team, CHENG’s office, NAVSEA, and external customers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead cross program projects that integrate digital tools (e.g., TeamcenterNX) to improve workflow efficiency.
  • Develop, standardize, and implement best practice design procedures and training programs for designers at all levels.
  • Create and deliver training programs for department designers at all levels.
  • Lead quality issue investigations, develop corrective actions, and guide teams to resolve emergent high priority issues.
Must Have
  • Bachelor of Science Degree and 5 years of related experience;
  • 4 years of related exempt experience can be substituted for Bachelor's Degree;
  • 8 years of non-related exempt experience can be substituted for Bachelor's Degree;
  • 12 years of non-exempt, Manufacturing, Military, Shipbuilding or Trades experience can be substituted for Bachelor's Degree.
Nice to Have
  • Proven experience in design, project management, and problem solving for CVN class ship design or modernization, including familiarity with waterfront operations and designer specific requirements.
  • Experience with digital product definition data practices and specifications with deep knowledge of 3 D product modeling processes and procedures (TeamcenterNX, PLM).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to interact effectively with all levels of NAVSEA, NNS management, and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with limited supervision while leading multidisciplinary teams.
