Job summary

Huntington Ingalls Industries, Inc. is seeking an Engineer Design 2 to track, calculate, and manage weight, CG, and mass properties of vessels from concept to delivery. You’ll ensure compliance with contract requirements and naval architecture principles for optimal stability and performance.

You will develop weight estimates, analyze equipment changes, and participate in in-yard duties, including incline experiments, to support ship construction and integration.

Qualifications

  • Must have: High School diploma with 6 years of experience; or an Associate with 4 years; or a Bachelor’s with 2 years; or a Master’s with 0 years.
  • Nice to have: 2+ years in Weight Control field.

Responsibilities

  • Design major components or portions of a functional system to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations.
  • Develop data and preliminary layouts, sketches, and notes for design proposals.
  • Investigate design factors such as ease of manufacture, materials, interchangeability, weight, and cost.
  • Coordinate with other organizations affected by design development and check drawings for accuracy.
  • Maintain ship weight estimates and weight reports, analyze effect of changes, prepare technical documents and CDRLs.

The Role

Designs major components or major portions of a functional system to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations. Develops basic data and makes preliminary layouts, sketches, and notes necessary to present design proposal. Investigates pertinent design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials and equipment, interchangeability, replaceability, strength-weight efficiency, and contractual specification requirements and cost. Coordinates with other organizations affected by design development. Makes layouts of complex assemblies and details parts of devices, mechanisms, and structures. Checks completed layouts and drawings for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, procedures, specifications, and accuracy of calculations and dimensioning. Identifies design errors, omissions, and other deficiencies, and recommends revisions and/or improvements in design layout to responsible engineers or designers.

Engineer Design 2 is a position that is responsible for tracking, calculating, and managing the weight, center of gravity, and mass properties of vessels from early conceptual design through final delivery. This role ensures compliance with contract requirements, safety standards, and naval architecture principles to guarantee optimal vessel stability, performance, and structural integrity.

Some of the key responsibilities include but not limited to; develop and maintain ship weight estimates and weight reports, calculate center of gravity impacts, analyze the effect of equipment additions and/or design changes, help prepare technical documentiaons and CDRLs for management and customer, as well as participate in in yard duties including incline experiments.

Must Have

High School diploma and 6 years of experience

Associates degree and 4 years of experience

Bachelors degree and 2 years of experience

-or-

Masters degree or above and 0 years of experience

Nice to Have

2+ years of experience in the Weight Control field.
