You don't have to be a mathematician or scientist. But you should enjoy understanding why things work and figuring out what to do when they don't.

You talk to the people on site that do the job to learn their viewpoint and pain points (not just what you’re told in a conference room). You look to solve the actual problem, not just alleviate the symptoms.
