BWX Technologies, Inc. in Lynchburg, VA, seeks an experienced Engineering Codes & Methods Platform Lead for the Advanced Technologies Office. You will serve as a technical lead for computational tools and methods that underpin research and engineering efforts, coordinating across multidisciplinary teams.

The role requires deep knowledge of modeling, simulation, software QA, and reactor/fuel physics, including neutronics, thermal hydraulics, and structural analyses. U.S.

Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree in engineering or physics is required.
• Minimum of four (4) years of relevant experience is required.
• Understanding of nuclear and non-nuclear phenomena affecting system performance during normal and off-normal events.
• Understanding of static and time-dependent behaviors and attributes of physics behind nuclear and non-nuclear systems.

Position Overview

BWXT is seeking an experienced Engineering Codes & Methods Platform Lead for our Advanced Technologies (AT) office in Lynchburg, VA. The ideal candidate will serve as a technical lead for a team responsible for the computational tools and methods that underpin our research and engineering efforts. This role requires substantial technical expertise, demonstrated leadership capability, and the ability to coordinate complex activities across multidisciplinary teams. The successful candidate will possess deep knowledge of modeling and simulation requirements, software quality assurance, and the physics associated with reactor and fuel systems—including neutronics, thermal hydraulics, and structural analyses. They must have exceptional interpersonal skills to coordinate multiple activities simultaneously across joint organizational teams.

Your Day to Day as a Engineering Codes and Methods Platform Lead

• Create models and simulations of nuclear reactors and nuclear fuels with historical, specialty, and modern computational tools.
• Coordinate and/or work with teams in the generation of computational methods, analytical procedures, and organizational / technical processes associated with computational tools and methods.
• Coordinate multiple research and engineering activities simultaneously within a joint organizational team using scrum project management framework.
• Execute project engineering activities (task plans, schedules, etc.).
• Provide technical and strategic direction to teams, ensuring alignment with program objectives and quality standards.
• Foster a high-performing team environment, including collaboration across multiphysics areas of structural mechanics, thermal/hydraulics, and neutronics.

Required Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree in engineering or physics is required.
• A minimum of four (4) years of relevant experience is required.
• Must have an understanding of nuclear and non-nuclear phenomena that impact the performance and behavior of systems during normal and off-normal events.
• Must have an understanding of static and time-dependent behaviors and attributes of physics behind nuclear and non-nuclear systems.
• Must have knowledge of software configuration, quality, and development best practices and standards is required. Knowledge of revision-controlled software releases through a centralized version control system is required.
• Must be able to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely written and verbal communication.
• Must be a strong team player with the ability to develop effective relationships with internal and external customers and suppliers.
• Demonstrated leadership capabilities, including:
  • Experience facilitating technical teams in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.
  • Ability to provide clear direction, constructive feedback, and effective mentorship
  • Strong decision-making skills with the ability to prioritize and balance competing demands
  • Proven success in fostering collaborative, inclusive, and accountable team culture
• Travel (<25%) domestic and international.
• Must be a U.S. citizen.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) or Department of Defense (DOD) security clearance, whichever is required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with nuclear modeling and simulation and relevant nuclear quality standards.
• Knowledge of MOOSE applications.

Pay: $86,450.00 - $136,000.00

The base salary range for this position in Virginia (US-VA) at the start of employment is expected to be between $86,450.00 and $136,000.00 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed 'at-will,’ unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement. The company further reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment, compensation or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and other market factors.
