Job description
Overview

Engineering Assistant I, II, or III - Structural Materials Section at Texas Department of Transportation.

Performs engineering work with job rotation, training and continuing education in design, construction, inspection, maintenance, surveying, environmental and/or transportation operations-related activities to support engineering licensing/registration. Design activity is supervised by a licensed professional engineer. Duties include construction of prefabricated structural materials and review of product quality and fabrication processes at outdoor fabrication plants. Work involves contact with local governmental representatives, engineering contractors and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Responsibilities
  • Actively prepares for professional engineering licensing/registration through training and exams and maintains required documentation.
  • Applies engineering principles, methods, and techniques to transportation-related activities.
  • Participates in Career Development for the Engineering Assistants program, including job rotation, training, and continuing education.
  • Performs construction inspection and material sampling/testing.
  • Performs engineering-related calculations, data collection, evaluation, and analysis.
  • Performs engineering-related duties in transportation engineering.
  • Reviews construction plans prepared by consultants.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Additional duties for Engineer Assistant II include:

  • Performs advanced and specialized engineering work.
  • Assists in training less experienced engineering assistants, specialists and/or technicians.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Additional duties for Engineer Assistant III include:

  • Trains less experienced engineering assistants, specialists, and technicians.
  • May serve as a lead worker and perform related tasks.
  • Performs engineering-related data collection, evaluation, and analysis.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science (bachelor's or higher) accepted by TX PELS. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in engineering or a Master of Engineering from an ABET-accredited program may substitute for a Bachelor's degree.
  • Doctoral degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program may substitute for a Bachelor's degree.

Experience:

  • Engineer Assistant I: No work experience required. No supervisory experience required.
  • Engineer Assistant II: 1 year of engineering-related experience. No supervisory experience required.
  • Engineer Assistant III: 2 years of engineering-related experience. No supervisory experience required. Passing the Professional Engineer (PE) exam prior to obtaining requisite experience may substitute for two years of experience.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license (state vehicle driving required).
  • Additional Certification required for Engineer Assistant II and III: TX Engineer In Training Certificate.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Passed the FE.

Additional competencies for Engineer Assistant III include:

  • Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations; transportation design principles and methods.
  • Proficient in leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
  • Subject to hazards such as moving vehicles, high places, heat, or chemicals.
  • Required to wear protective gear (e.g., respirator, hard hat).
  • Light work; ability to lift up to 20 lbs; frequently up to 10 lbs.
  • Close visual acuity for data/figures, screens, and reading.
