Job description

Position Overview

This role serves as an Associate Director of Design (Engineering/Architectural Supervisor III) within the Operations Division’s Capital Project Management unit, overseeing capital improvement design and construction projects for the University and ensuring on‑time, on‑budget completion that meets all applicable codes and regulations.

Responsibilities
  • Lead a staff of 3–6 project managers handling multi‑million‑dollar capital improvement projects, including new construction, renovations, and infrastructure upgrades.
  • Coordinate project planning, scheduling, and budgeting to achieve program goals while minimizing disruption to campus operations.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local building codes and university policies.
  • Develop detailed action plans, set priorities, and monitor progress to resolve issues promptly.
  • Provide fiscal oversight, review and approve budgets, and manage contract administration.
  • Mentor, evaluate, and train staff to support employee growth and engagement.
  • Lead change‑management activities, including development and implementation of new policies and procedures.
  • Serve as a technical resource for media or external communications when necessary.
Qualifications

• Hold a professional degree in architecture or civil engineering (master’s degree preferred).

• Possess an architectural license or be registered as a Professional Engineer, with the ability to obtain North Carolina registration.

• Demonstrated experience managing complex capital improvement projects, ideally in a higher‑education setting.

• Strong knowledge of engineering/architectural theory, building codes, and budget management.

• Excellent communication, leadership, and problem‑solving skills.

Required Licenses / Certifications

Architectural license or Professional Engineer registration, with ability to obtain North Carolina registration.
