Job summary

Los Alamos National Security LLC is seeking an Engineered Systems Technician (EST) 1 or 2 for the HPRF 805 MHz team in Los Alamos, NM. The technician will support the operation and maintenance of high-power RF systems, perform troubleshooting, and enhance system reliability.

Job description

What You Will Do

The AOT division’s Radio Frequency Engineering (RFE) group seeks an Engineered Systems Technician (EST) 1 or 2 for the HPRF 805 MHz team. The role supports operation, maintenance, and modernization of high‑power RF systems at LANSCE, including 201.25 MHz and 805 MHz LINACs, klystrons, diacrodes, high‑voltage systems, and the Electronics Test Laboratory.

  • Assist engineers, technologists, and technicians with troubleshooting, repair, and routine maintenance of RF systems and high‑voltage power supplies.
  • Conduct RF system testing, equipment set‑up, prototype testing, and data collection.
  • Support system upgrades, installation of new equipment, and testing of klystrons and modulators.
  • Maintain RF test stands, document maintenance and test results, and aid in reliability improvement initiatives.

At the EST 2 level, additional responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate maintenance activities and lead small projects or work packages.
  • Develop maintenance procedures, manage spare parts and test equipment inventories.
  • Provide technical recommendations for equipment repairs and upgrades.
What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Use bench‑top electronic test equipment, hand tools, and measuring devices for testing and troubleshooting.
  • Perform installation, maintenance, commissioning, and repairs on electrical/electronic equipment or systems.
  • Complete forklift and incidental crane training/certification.
  • Provide after‑hours on‑call support, approximately one week per month during the operating season.

Additional Requirements for EST 2:

  • Read and understand electrical wiring diagrams or schematics.
  • Troubleshoot circuits with multiple integrated or discrete components.
  • Experience with high‑power RF devices, high‑voltage devices, or RF transport systems.
Education / Experience

EST 1: high school diploma or equivalent with 1–2 years of related experience.

EST 2: high school diploma or equivalent with at least three years of related experience.

Desired Qualifications

EST 1:

  • Work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Learn installation, testing, repair, and maintenance skills under supervision.
  • Read and interpret written or verbal instructions, drawings, and specifications.
  • Prepare and present system/equipment reports.
  • Know relevant legal requirements and environmental impacts.

EST 2:

  • Experience with particle accelerator operations or a similar complex facility.
  • Familiarity with Conduct of Operations and Conduct of Research principles.
  • Installation and testing of high‑power RF devices, high‑voltage/pulsed‑power devices, RF amplifiers, or RF transport systems.
  • Installation, operation, and troubleshooting of high‑power RF systems.
Work Environment

On‑site location in Los Alamos, NM. The position requires a 1‑year continuous service commitment. Regular appointment employees are required to serve at least one year in their current position before being eligible for new job postings.
