Job summary

FirstEnergy is seeking a Transmission Engineer to design and analyze transmission structures and foundations, perform wire sag calculations, develop construction packages, and create standards for transmission projects. The role requires working knowledge of PLS-CADD and exposure to Power Line Systems design tools, with potential travel across FirstEnergy systems.

Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of PLS-CADD
  • Experience with Power Line Systems design suite is a plus
  • Foundation design experience using FAD Tools, Ensoft or similar is a plus
  • Ability to review and interpret standards and process flows
  • Willingness to travel within FirstEnergy system as needed

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain safe environment for transmission line network safety of workers and public
  • Create engineering designs and standards for transmission line projects including wood and steel structures and foundations
  • Coordinate designs with other FirstEnergy areas and regional operating companies
  • Engage with industry groups to promote best practices (EPRI, CEATI, EEi, NATF, etc.)
  • Represent FirstEnergy at local zoning hearings and utility commission hearings as needed
  • Provide engineering mentorship and support to staff on standards, procedures, and designs
  • Review encroachments to ensure NESC clearance and coordinate with ROW and Transmission Line Maintenance teams
  • Assist during emergencies and storm activities as needed
  • Travel within FE system to support transmission initiatives

About the Opportunity

TheTransmission Engineer designs andconducts analyses ofavariety ofwoodandsteeltransmission structures and structure foundations, calculates wire sags and clearances using PLS-CADD, calculates NESC and OSHA clearance requirements, develops design packages forconstruction, creates bills-of-materialfortransmission line projects, creates standardsandassociated process flowsfortransmission structuresandlines,conductsavariety oftechnical research and analysis, interprets results andassists inimplementation activities.Theideal candidate willpossess working knowledge ofPLS-CADD.Additional experience withthePower Line Systems design suite, and foundation design experience using FAD Tools, Ensoft or similar program suites are a plus.

Thesuccessful candidate willprovide ahighlevel of service, continuous support, and proactive involvement surrounding technical subjectmattertoleadership andpeers andwillmaintain asafeworkplace forco-workers and the community based upon knowledge of potential hazards and industry regulations/requirements.

This is an on-site position located in Greensburg, PA.

Responsibilitiesinclude:

  • Developing and maintaining a safe environment for the transmission line network to ensure the safety of co workers, contractors, work crews and the general public.
  • Creating engineering designs and standards for transmission line projects that include wood and steel structures and structure foundations, line plan and profile, wire arrangements, field reports, transmission switch drawings and wire sag charts.
  • Must be able to work independently as well as in teams to coordinate designs with other FirstEnergy areas of responsibility including Siting and Permitting, Project Development, Project Management, Maintenance, Forestry, Real Estate, Substations and Construction, as well as the Regional operating companies.
  • Working with various industry and regulatory groups as required to learn and advocate industry best practices (e.g., EPRI, CEATI, EEi, NATF, etc.).
  • Appearing on behalf of FirstEnergy at local public zoning hearings and planning committee meetings, and state utility commission hearings as a subject matter expert.
  • Providing engineering support and mentorship to employees to assist in their learning of transmission line standards, procedures, designs and associated issues.
  • Reviewing transmission line encroachments to ensure NESC clearance requirements are met. Coordinating encroachment responses with ROW Services and Transmission Line Maintenance personnel and ensure the public safety is protected.
  • Providing assistance during emergencies and storm related activities. Storm response duties may include time out of the office.
  • May be required to travel throughout the FE system and to other industry-related activities as necessary supporting FirstEnergy transmission initiatives
