Job summary

HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding division seeks a structural engineer to analyze and develop specifications for metal, non-metallic, and composite structures across naval platforms. You’ll evaluate damage tolerance, durability, and design limits with CATIA, IDEAS, and Pro/ENGINEER tools, contributing to safe, reliable ships.

The role supports plant maintenance and construction, drafting blueprints, and coordinating with consultants and authorities to meet schedules and budgets.

The Role

Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs. Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling. Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis. Tools utilized may include CATIA, IDEAS, ProEngineer and a variety of software applications.

Specific To This Position

The position will support plant maintenance and building construction. Responsibilities may include drafting blueprints, supervising construction projects, and ensuring compliance with legal and environmental regulations. Other responsibilities of planning, designing, and overseeing the construction and maintenance of various structures and infrastructure, including roads and sewage systems. This position would coordinate with consultants, contractors, and local enforcement agencies to ensure projects are completed on time and within budget. The ideal candidate should possess a strong understanding of civil engineering principles, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to work with a team or professionals from different disciplines.
