Job summary

PacifiCorp is seeking Principal Engineer level candidates for Salt Lake City to design and evaluate complex power line systems and foundations. You will lead advanced studies, mentor junior staff, and deliver detailed specifications and bid packages for external services.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil/structural, electrical or mechanical engineering.
  • A PE license is preferred in at least one of the listed states or the ability to obtain in Utah/ID/WY/OR/WA/CA.
  • 10+ years in power line and foundation design preferred.
  • Strong project management and leadership abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Independently conduct highly complex engineering research studies and analyses.
  • Lead a team to deliver on commitments within timelines.

General Purpose

Develops advanced engineering studies, plans, specifications, calculations, evaluations, design documents, and performance assessments associated with the planning, design, licensing, construction, operation, and maintenance of the company’s generation, transmission lines and assets, distribution lines and assets, telecommunication assets, or other utility facilities/systems.

This position is available at multiple levels. Applicants will be considered for the level that best matches their education and experience.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, modify, and evaluate complex systems, process, or facilities to support company objectives, utilizing engineering methods for power line design.
  • Develop highly complex engineering studies, plans, specifications, calculations, evaluations, design documents, and performance assessments for power line design.
  • Determine methods and techniques for obtaining results.
  • Act as a lead/expert in the work group; train and mentor associate and career level engineers, technicians and drafters.
  • Recommend alternative engineering solutions to management to meet business needs.
  • Deliver on commitments and manage outside engineering services to accomplish the assigned work.
  • Maintain project timelines and budgets.
  • Analyze and design engineering methods for power line design including but not limited to wood, fiberglass, and steel structures, various conductor types, insulators, shield wire, optical overhead ground wire, guy wire, anchors, connection hardware, structural supports such as braces, steel and wood crossarms.
  • Analyze and design engineering methods for foundation design including but not limited to helical piers, helical piles, concrete drilled piers, and grillage foundations.

In addition to the above, the Principal Engineer responsibilities include:

  • Independently conduct highly complex engineering research studies and technical analyses in areas of specialized expertise not commonly available or obtainable in the competitive engineering market for power line and foundation design.
  • Provide technical expertise for critical plant and/or facility components for power line design.
  • Develop detailed design specifications and prepare bid packages for external engineering services and similar contracts to support the needs of the business.
  • Review, investigate and evaluate system and equipment performance, tests and analyses performed by senior Engineering staff.
  • Participate in government, industry, collegiate and other applicable associations or work groups which have the ability to influence or set policy impacting the future of our utility.
  • Analyze and design engineering methods for lattice tower and foundations utilized in power line design.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil/structural, electrical or mechanical engineering.
  • A minimum of six or more years’ experience in industrial power line systems or electric utility power line systems and design.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of principles in area of power line and foundation design.
  • Project management and leadership skills including the ability to work as a team member, to maintain project timelines, budgets, and deliver on commitments.
  • Understanding of company’s business, and relevant policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, local laws, regulations and the National Electric Codes.
  • Knowledge of the applicable IEEE, ACSE, ACI code requirements.
  • Ability to perform effectively in high-pressure situations while maintaining focus and calmness.
  • Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills involving the ability to work cross-functionally to understand requirements, present alternatives, and recommendations.
  • Proficient with the use of personal computers including automated tools.
  • Proficient with the use of PLSCADD, LPile, MFAD and TFAD.

In addition to the above, the Principal Engineer requirements include:

  • A minimum of 10 years industry experience as a practicing engineer, including experience performing highly technical work of a specialized nature in power line and foundation design.
  • A PE license is preferred in at least one of the following states or the ability to obtain a license in Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Oregon, Washington, California.
  • Highest level of communication and interpersonal skills involving the ability to work cross-functionally to understand requirements, present alternatives, and recommendations.
  • Effectively lead a team to deliver on commitments within constrained timelines.
