Job summary

Responsibilities

  • Support product modifications, ongoing maintenance, and updates to ensure quality and performance.
  • Lead troubleshooting and root‑cause investigations and develop data‑driven corrective actions.
  • Provide technical support to manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and customers.
  • Execute validation testing, qualification updates, and documentation for sustaining activities.
  • Evaluate and implement material, process, or design changes to improve reliability or reduce cost.
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation including reports, drawings, change records, and presentations.
  • Support cross‑functional teams and may lead technical workstreams.
  • Ensure proper documentation of experimental work and contribute to IP reviews.

The Impact You’ll Make in this Role

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer focused on sustaining engineering, you will support the ongoing performance, reliability, and manufacturability of existing products within the Safety and Industrial business. Your work will center on product improvements, qualification updates, process optimization, cost‑reduction initiatives, and day‑to‑day technical support for manufacturing and cross‑functional teams.

  • Support product modifications, ongoing product maintenance, and updates to ensure consistent quality and performance.
  • Lead troubleshooting and root‑cause investigations for product or process issues and develop data‑driven corrective actions.
  • Provide technical support to manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and customers by analyzing performance data and recommending engineering solutions.
  • Execute validation testing, qualification updates, and documentation required for sustaining activities.
  • Evaluate and implement material, process, or design changes that improve product reliability or reduce cost.
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation, including reports, drawings, change records, and presentation materials.
  • Support cross‑functional teams and may lead specific technical workstreams related to product improvements.
  • Ensure proper documentation of experimental work and contribute to intellectual property reviews as applicable.
  • Experience with data‑driven analysis methods to support design decisions and problem‑solving.
  • Knowledge of Six Sigma methodologies and their application in engineering or manufacturing environments.
  • Leverage advanced AI‑assisted development and analysis tools to enhance firmware design, validation efficiency, and system‑level troubleshooting.
  • Provide mentorship or guidance to junior technical staff when needed.
Your Skills and Expertise

To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:

  • Possess a Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline from an accredited institution (completed and verified prior to start).
  • Minimum three (3) years of mechanical engineering experience within a private, public, government or military environment.
Additional Qualifications That Could Help You Succeed Even Further in This Role
  • Master’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Four or more years of mechanical engineering experience.
  • Experience with molding processes.
  • Strong problem‑solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, including technical presentations.
  • Ability to collaborate with and influence cross‑functional teams.
  • Self‑directed with demonstrated leadership capabilities.
