Job summary

Georg Fischer Central Plastics LLC seeks a Mechanical Engineer to design tools for plastic piping installation, perform FEA/DFMEA, and drive manufacturing optimization. You will prototype, test, and refine products, ensuring manufacturability and lifecycle support while collaborating with Product Management, Sales, and Production. A hands-on engineer with SolidWorks expertise is ideal.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related field.
  • 5+ years of tool/equipment design experience.
  • Proficient with SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD software.
  • Experience with piping system design is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop tools and equipment for plastic piping system installation.
  • Perform FEA for tooling and equipment.
  • Conduct DFMEA analyses to improve reliability.
  • Prototype rapidly and test designs hands-on.
  • Apply DFM principles to optimize manufacturability and costs.
  • Create GD&T drawings and BOMs/routings.
  • Maintain tool/equipment instructions and lifecycle processes.
  • Support ECO processes and project management on new products.

Job description

Summary: Responsible for the design and development of tools and equipment for use in the installation of plastic piping systems.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Responsible for the mechanical design of plastic piping system installation tools and equipment
  • Perform Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for applicable tooling and equipment.
  • Perform Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA)
  • Perform rapid prototyping and be hands-on with product testing.
  • Understand and utilize DFM (Design for Manufacturing) principles to help ensure product designs are optimized for manufacturing capabilities and efficiencies.
  • Create detailed product drawings using Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Create product bills of material and routings.
  • Create and maintain tools and equipment user instructions.
  • Oversee the product life cycle management of existing products.
  • Oversee the ECO (Engineering Change Order) process for responsible products.
  • Participate in feasibility studies and costing estimates for new products.
  • Be the project manager or contributing member of applicable new product development projects.
  • Provide timely engineering support to Production, Product Management, Sales, Customers as required.
  • Work closely with Product Management to review the existing product portfolio to identify and implement cost reduction and performance enhancement opportunities.
  • Work closely with Product Management and Sales to understand customer pains and then provide effective solutions to address.
Required Skills/Abilities
  • Ability to understand and create complex plans or diagrams (e.g., blueprints)
  • Self-starter/Acts on own initiative making decisions after a thorough evaluation.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills across departments.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Light travel (both domestically and internationally) should be expected.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related technical field required.
  • 5+ years of tool and/or equipment design.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience using SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD software to develop product designs.
  • Prior experience in piping system design and/or field experience with piping systems is desirable.
  • Hydraulics experience is desirable.
  • Electromechanical experience is desirable.
  • Project management experience
Working Conditions / Physical Requirements
  • Primary work in a climate controlled office environment
  • Eye/hand coordination for more than 50% of the time
  • Visual strain for more than 50% of the time
  • Listening, sitting, bending, standing, stooping, walking, observing, grasping, pushing, pulling, and keyboarding
